"I appreciate the emphasis on working in groups"

Marina Sakurai from Japan not only enjoyed the focus on group work during her exchange studies in Umeå, but also the closeness to nature and clean air.

Why did you choose Umeå University?

I decided to do an exchange semester abroad at Umeå University because they are very accepting to international students, have a very high level of English, and I was attracted to the beautiful nature.

What do you like most about your studies in Umeå?

I really appreciate the emphasis on working in groups. It gave me the chance to communicate with others and get to know my classmates much better.

What has been the most challenging aspect of your exchange experience?

The language barrier has been challenging for me, but I have developed so much since I arrived at the beginnning of the semester.

What has been the most memorable moment so far?

There have been so many memorable moments, but I will always remember when I ate a yummy Swedish pastry called a punsch roll (punschrulle) for the first time. It's also called a dammsugare in Swedish because it kinda looks like a vacuum cleaner.

What are you favourite spots around Umeå and/or campus?

I really like the bike path that runs between Rullstensgatan and Campus Friidrottsarena, which is the way I get to the University from my student housing. I also like Café Lindell and the pretty areas around the Campus Pond.

What will you miss most about studying here at Umeå University?

I will really miss the clean air, and wide open spaces. Not only was the campus big and beautiful, but the closeness to nature is something that I'll always remember fondly.

What would you say or what advice would you give to another international student thinking of attending Umeå University?

Make sure to study hard individually, and remember to take the warmest clothes you have!
