WELCOME TO

Master's programme in environmental science with focus on sustainable development

Dear student, welcome to Umeå University and the Department Ecology and Environmental Science, EMG! It is one of the largest departments and hosts scientists, teachers, and students from many different countries. Within the master's programme, you will study a range of topics to tackle the global environmental challenges that must be overcome to achieve global sustainability, such as climate change, natural resource use and environmental pollution. Welcome! Heidi Burdett, programme coordinator

How to start

  • 1. Your offer

You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

    Support for students with disabilities

If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

About the programme

  • Programme/course information

For students that start in the autumn, the mandatory elements of the Master’s programme in Environmental Science with a focus on Sustainable Development consists of four courses during Year 1, and a final Degree thesis project of 60 ECTS or 30 ECTS in Year 2.

As first courses, you take Transition towards a sustainable society and Sustainability Science, followed by Analyses of Environmental Change and an option in the spring of year 1. Additional credits are chosen from our advanced level courses, provided that your choice meets the qualification requirements for the Master’s degree and that you have the necessary course pre-requisites (where applicable).

The teaching is conducted in close collaboration with on-going research in our department and we encourage you to especially align your thesis projects to this on-going research. This will provide you with a network of researchers to learn and develop from and enable you to place your thesis topic within our internationally reputed research advancements.

Contact the study counselors (Sandra Straumdal; sandra.straumdal@umu.se) if you are concerned about individual courses and/or go to the Environmental Science programme home page for more information.

I look forward to meeting you in September!
