Postdoctoral fellowship 6 months, at the Department of Medical and Translational Biology

The Department of Medical and Translational Biology is looking for a postdoctoral fellow in our Laboratory for Experimental Ophthalmology. The fellowship is for 6 months, starting 1st of June 2024.

Description of the fellowship

Our research group focuses on studying the mechanistic processes underlying corneal wound healing, with particular focus on the role of collagen-producing cells, keratocytes, and their cell death.

This fellowship comprises studies that will involve conducting various biochemical and cellular/molecular biological analysis methods in a project specifically related to different forms of cell death, including the signaling pathways regulating para- and pyroptosis, primarily in keratocytes (see Requirements for detailed information on necessary prerequisites regarding methodological expertise).

We are seeking a talented and motivated researcher at the postdoctoral level, with extensive experience in experimental biomedical research in a laboratory setting, and with an interest in experimentally studying mechanisms involved in various types of cell death. Your role will involve relatively independent planning and execution of experiments, method development, and analysis.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the fellowship, the applicant should have PhD and demonstrate a good understanding within the subject area.

Furthermore, the applicant should have experience from postdoctoral research work, have solid experience in cell culture work with keratocytes, and analysis of various forms of cell death, including para- and pyroptosis, as well as experience with the following methods:

  • qPCR
  • Western blot
  • Electron microscopy
  • IncuCyte Life-Cell Analysis System
  • Immunofluorescence
  • Cell death assays

We are looking for a talented and motivated candidate with a record of productive research, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

It is presupposed that the candidate masters scientific English and have good general communication skills in English (written and verbal). The candidate’s collaborative skills and suitability for the project are especially considered in the assessment of the candidate's qualifications.

Additional useful qualifications

Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.

Application and conditions

The fellowship is for 6 months between 2024-06-01 – 2024-11-30.

Send your application as a pdf, marked with the reference number FS 2.1.6-768-24 both in the document and in the subject line of the email, to medel@diarie.umu.se. The application can be written in English or Swedish. Application deadline is 2 May 2024.

The application should include:

  • A brief cover letter (about one page) describing the applicant's research experience, research interest and suitability for the project.
  • Curriculum vitae which includes degrees, positions, list of publications, as well as names and contact information for two references.
