Postdoctoral Fellowship (2 years) in Regenerative Endodontics, focusing on omics-analysis

The Department of Odontology offers a postdoctoral scholarship within the project "Future directions in regenerative endodontics". The scholarship refers to full-time studies for two years with entry on 1 August 2024, or as agreed. The deadline for applications is 29 April 2024. The tax-free 2-year scholarship is financed by the Kempestiftelserna.

Project description

Regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) shows great promise in addressing the consequences of pulp infection in young, immature teeth by utilizing dental stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP) to restore damaged tooth structures. Ensuring that bacterial elimination is paramount for targeted therapy to succeed. Our research is dedicated to analyzing the endogenous microbiota of immature and infected root canals, while taking into account physiological conditions, including oxygen parameters.

Furthermore, to understand the biological interactions between SCAP and bacteria, we will delve into the transcriptome and cytokine profiling of SCAP upon exposure to bacteria. We aim to provide insights into the cellular responses when confronted with an inflammatory environment. The specific focus of your project will be to analyze omics profiles induced by Apical Papilla stem cells in response to  oral pathogenic strains and microbiomes.

Qualifications

Eligible for a scholarship as a postdoctoral fellow is someone who has completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree, in dentistry, molecular biology, microbiology or a related field. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time when the decision on scholarship recipients is made. In order to be eligible as a postdoctoral fellow, the candidate should primarily be someone who has completed a degree according to the previous paragraph no more than three years ago. If there are special reasons, it can be considered as a previously completed doctoral degree. With special reasons is meant leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

We are looking for a driven postdoctoral fellow for Nelly Romani Vestman's research group. We are looking for a very talented and curious researcher with independent and critical thinking, experience in productive research and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Additional requirements are:

  • A strong background in various genomics methods and bioinformatics.
  • Experience with omics approaches (eg genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) and bioinformatics.
  • Knowledge of: binomial, Poisson and normal distribution, as well as the ability to use experimental data to create descriptive statistics and graphs; perform hypothesis testing, t-tests, ANOVAs, correlation, regression, multiple and nonlinear regression, chi-square, G-test, log-linear modeling, logistic regression and survival, discriminant, PCA, and cluster analyses.
  • Communication skills in spoken and written English at a high level are required.

Merits

  • Experience working with SPSS/R, Linux, Bash or Python is a highly desirable skill.
  • Previous background in the stem cell field.
  • Publications in the areas of gene regulation.

The scholarship is fully funded for 2 years but the candidate will also be encouraged to apply for their own grants.

Application

The application must contain:

  • A short description of your research interests (max. 1 A4) and justification for why you are interested.
  • Curriculum Vitae - CV with publication list and technical skills
  • Degree certificate from doctoral education or documentation that makes it clear when the doctoral degree is expected to be obtained
  • Copies of other diplomas, academic course certificates and/or grades, diplomas or other documents
  • Contact information for two reference persons

References are provided in connection with any interview.

Submit your application as a PDF marked with the reference number FS 2.1.7-507-24, both in the file name and in the subject field of the email, to medel@diarie.umu.se. The application can be written in English or Swedish. Application deadline is 29 April 2024
