Umeå University presents statistics and facts below concerning various enterprises at Umeå University. These details are divided into Education, Research, Personnel and Finance and related to the 2004–2008 calendar years. These statistics have been taken from the Umeå University annual reports.
EDUCATION
Number of university entrants at first and second cycle level
The number of students registered for first cycle programmes at Umeå University for the first time has been increasing constantly. In 2008 there were 9 311 new entrants, an increase of 18.3 per cent compared with 2004. 63 per cent of new entrants were female in 2008, which is an increase of 2 percentage points compared with 2004.
Number of students in education at first and second cycle level
The number of students registered in the Ladok study register has been increasing over a number of years. In 2008 there were 28 022 students at first cycle level registered at Umeå University, an increase of 5.1 per cent compared with 2004. 62 per cent of students were female in 2008, which is an increase of 1 percentage point compared with 2004.
Number of incoming and outgoing exchange students at first and second cycle level
International students may be divided into non-exchange and exchange students. Non-exchange students are students who travel to a different country independently, i.e. not within the scope of an exchange agreement. Exchange students study in a different country within the scope of an exchange agreement. There were 813 incoming non-exchange students for the academic year 2007/08, representing an increase of 10.8 per cent. The number of incoming exchange students increased by 94.1 per cent to 557 over the same period. There were 195 outgoing exchange students for the academic year 2007/08, an increase of 30.9 per cent. There are no reliable statistics concerning the number of outgoing non-exchange students as these people do not need to be registered in the Ladok study register.
Number of degrees in education at first and second cycle level
There are two main types of degree: general (e.g. Bachelor of Arts/Science and Master of Arts/Science) and professional qualifications (e.g. Master of Education, Master of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Medicine). The number of degrees awarded at Umeå University has increased enormously over the past few years. 4 303 degrees were awarded in 2008, an increase of 26 per cent compared with 2004. The main reason for this increase is the fact that more and more students are taking double degrees, e.g. a professional qualification and a general degree.
Number of new entrants at third cycle level
217 people were accepted for third cycle level in 2008, down 3.6 per cent compared with 2004. The faculties have consciously reduced their intake, mainly for financial reasons. 48 per cent of these new entrants were female.
Number of active students in education at third cycle level
The number of students at third cycle level, with an activity level of at least 10 per cent, has fallen over the past few years. The number of active doctoral students was 1 206, down 13.9 per cent compared with 2004. This reduction is due mainly to financial reasons. 52 per cent of doctoral students were female, a figure unchanged compared with 2004.
Number of degrees in education at third cycle level
A Licentiate is worth 120 higher education credits (two years of full-time study), while a doctorate is worth 240 higher education credits (four years of full-time study). 30 Licentiates were awarded in 2008, unchanged compared with 2004. 21 of these were awarded to women, representing an increase of 7 percentage points compared with 2004. A total of 204 doctorates were awarded in 2008, an increase of 22.9 per cent on 2004. 50 per cent of the degrees awarded at third cycle level went to women in 2008, a decrease of 1 percentage point compared with 2004.
RESEARCH
Income from direct government funding (SEK millions)
The government research funding is made up of a sum of money allocated to higher education institutions for research. This money is spent on financing salaries, premises, equipment and also studies at third cycle level. It also includes remuneration to the county council for its participation in clinical and odontological research. Direct government funding is up 17.4 per cent compared with 2004 and amounted to SEK 986 million in 2008.
Income from contributions (SEK millions)
Umeå University receives contributions from research councils (primarily the Swedish Research Council), research foundations, the EU Commission, Swedish organisations with no profit-related intent, Swedish authorities, municipalities and county councils, etc. Contributions are applied for in competition with other researchers and higher education institutions. The Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science and Technology are the biggest recipients of research funding. The income from contributions in 2008 amounted to SEK 495 million. This was an increase of 6.2 per cent compared with 2004.
Income from contract research (SEK millions)
Besides research funded by direct government funding and contributions, Umeå University is funded by research financed by fees, i.e. contract research. State authorities most commonly order contract research from the university. The Faculty of Social Sciences does most of the university’s contract research. In 2008, the university had an income of SEK 144 million for contract research, an increase of 2.9 per cent compared with 2004.
PERSONNEL
Number of employees (individuals and man-years)
Umeå University had 4 060 employees in 2008, equivalent to 3 458 man-years (the number of employees converted to full-time hours, minus leave and sick leave). The number of employees fell by 4.8 per cent compared with 2004, while the number of man-years fell by 6.9 per cent over the same period. 53 per cent of employees were female.
Number of teachers (man-years)
Teachers, by the definition of the Higher Education Ordinance, are professors, senior lecturers, lecturers and research assistants. There were 257 professors in 2008, a reduction of 3.7 per cent. There were 576 senior lecturers, an increase of 3.4 per cent. Lecturer numbers were down 18.9 per cent to 438 (the consequence of a deliberate strategy). There were 69 research assistants, representing a reduction of 32.4 per cent.

A total of 42 per cent of teachers were female in 2008. However, there are major variations between the categories.

Total income (SEK millions)
Total income for Umeå University has increased by 12.4 per cent over the last five years. Income amounted to SEK 3 166 million in 2008.
Income from education at first and second cycle level (SEK millions)
In 2008, Umeå University’s income for education at first and second cycle level amounted to SEK 1 386 million. Income has increased by 7.1 per cent over the last five years.
Income from research and education at third cycle level (SEK millions)
In 2008, Umeå University’s income for research and education at third cycle level amounted to SEK 1 779 million. Income has increased by 16.9 per cent over the last five years.
Finance (%)
In 2008, 67 per cent of the university’s total income came from direct government funding, 16 per cent from contributions, and 15 per cent from contract research (fees). 2 per cent was financial income. These figures are more or less unchanged compared with 2004.
Personnel expenses (SEK millions)
Personnel expenses are the biggest item of expenditure for Umeå University. In 2008, this amounted to SEK 1 848 million, equivalent to 58 per cent of the balance sheet total. Personnel expenses have increased by 7.6 per cent since 2004.
Expenses for premises (SEK millions)
In 2008, the expenses for premises amounted to SEK 320 million, equivalent to 10.1 per cent of the balance sheet total. Expenses for premises have increased by 13.5 per cent since 2004.
Public authority capital (SEK millions)
Public authority capital is the accumulated difference between income and expenses carried over from previous years. In 2008, public authority capital accounted for 13.4 per cent of Umeå University’s total income. Authority capital has increased by 30.6 per cent since 2004.
Capital change (SEK millions)
The capital change for 2008, i.e. the profit, amounted to SEK 48 million. This is equivalent to 1.5 per cent of total income. The capital change represents a significant increase compared with 2004.
