Many of Marco H.D. van Leeuwen's studies deals with charity and care for the poor in history, in Europe as well as in Latin America and Russia. He examines, for example, the lives of recipients of poor relief, their strategies and the importance of the support of society and others for the living conditions of the vulnerable. He has also examined various aspects of social structure and social mobility. In addition to research studies, Marco H.D. van Leeuwen has strongly contributed to methodology in the database area. Among other things, he has been one of the initiators of what has today become an international standard for classification of information about professions in historical databases, HISCO.

Marco H.D. van Leeuwen will be awarded the title Honorary doctor of philosophy at the Annual Celebration Ceremony on 21 October at 17:00 in Aula Nordica.
