Information about the campus pond
[2010-03-18] Stage 3 of the construction project by the pond area in the centre of Campus Umeå, where dredge work will be performed, will take place between 15 and 31 March.
The reasons for the dredge work are to prevent overgrowth and to recreate a mirror effect of the water. Dredge work was last done in 1995.
2950 square metres of the pond’s total 5500 will be dredged, with an estimated volume of 1500 cubic metres of sludge. The sludge is classified as hazardous waste, due to contamination from surface water systems around Umeå. The sludge will therefore be taken to the Dåvamyran landfill site.
Akademiska Hus Norr AB have applied for and been granted permission to perform this work by the county administrative board in accordance to Swedish environmental legislation. The contractor for stage 3 is Svensk Markservice.
Other stages in the restoration of the Central Parkroom are:
Stage 1: Lindell Hall (ongoing)
Stage 2: Footpaths and bridges around the campus pond (will begin during spring 2010)
Stage 4: Strengthening of the outlet channel from the campus pond to prevent floods, and replacement of water pipe (will begin during spring 2010)
