Postdoctoral Fellowship in Physiology at the Department of Integrative Medical Biology

Description of the project:
“Circuits for Skilled Forelimb Movement”
Applications are invited from motivated and creative individuals who are interested in studying the function of neuronal circuits for forelimb movement. The main focus of our research is to understand the function and evolution of neuronal circuits in the brain that contribute to shaping the motor commands for skilled reaching and grasping with the forelimb and digits. We use a combination of advanced electrophysiological, optogenetic and behavioral techniques in rodents. In collaboration with leading international groups we also use genetic and molecular approaches. The laboratory is located in the Department of Integrative Medical Biology (IMB), at Umeå University, Sweden. IMB is an interdisciplinary department, with a strong focus in neuroscience particularly in questions related to sensory-motor control, recovery after brain injury and cognitive functions.

Qualifications:
Individuals with a background in electrophysiology, with a keen interest in the function of neural circuits are encouraged to apply. Technical experience with vertebrate model systems, intracellular electrophysiological recording from single neurons is an advantage. Experience with behavioral experiments and histological techniques are an advantage although training will be given. The successful candidate will have a recent or imminent Ph.D., not more than three years old, in a relevant discipline and be proficient in written and spoken English.

Application for the fellowship should include:

  1. A short cover letter (not more than 1 page) to include a description of your research experience and suitability for the position.
  2. Curriculum Vitae including: copies of exams, publication list, technical expertise, education, names and contact information for three referees.

For more information: contact Professor Bror Alstermark, Department of Integrative Medical Biology, Umeå University, 901 87 Umeå, Sweden, or via e-mail: bror.alstermark@physiol.umu.se

The fellowship is currently funded for up to two years. Start date after agreement.

Applications that are submitted electronically should be in Word or PDF format.

Your complete application, marked with reference number 223-819-13, should be sent to medel@diarie.umu.se (state the reference number as subject) or to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive June 3rd, 2013 at the latest.

We look forward to receiving your application!
