Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical NMR Metabolomics of Neurodegeneration

Umeå University is dedicated to providing creative environments for learning and work. We offer a wide variety of courses and programmes, world leading research, and excellent innovation and collaboration opportunities. More than 4 000 employees and 36 000 students have already chosen Umeå University. We welcome your application!

The Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Neuroscience, Umeå University, Sweden, is offering a 2-year full-time post-doctoral fellowship to join a project for integrated omics analysis of cerebrospinal fluid and blood samples collected longitudinally from patients with Parkinson’s disease, ALS and Alzheimer’s disease. The primary focus for the candidate will be to conduct NMR metabolomics for metabolite identification and quantification, and to potentially identify disease biomarkers. It includes sample preparation, recording and analysis of NMR experiments, as well as statistical and metabolic pathway analysis. It can also include implementation of new NMR techniques and analysis methods, and collection of metabolite reference spectra. This position offers the opportunity to develop skills in the NMR metabolomic analysis of human clinical samples, as well as the chance to make significant contributions to the understanding of neurodegenerative diseases.

We are looking for an outstanding post-doctoral fellow to take part in our research on neurodegeneration. The candidate should have a doctoral degree, preferentially received no longer than three years ago, in a field relevant for the project. In particular we seek candidates with a strong, documented, practical experience of NMR spectroscopy. Experience in the fields of neurodegenerative diseases, metabolomics and bioinformatics are also valuable assets. The candidate will perform studies independently following necessary training. Since the post-doc will interact in a multidisciplinary international environment, good oral and written communication skills in English are required. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability as well as on genuine enthusiasm for the topic.

The post-doc will be affiliated to the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Neuroscience (www.neuropharm.umu.se) and preform studies in the Chemical Biology Center (KBC) (www.kbc.umu.se). KBC provides well-equipped common facilities and excellent platforms, such as a newly upgraded state-of-the-art NMR facility. The successful candidate will receive a personal 2-year tax-exempt stipend from the Kempe Foundation, Sweden.

A complete application should include:

  • A cover letter summarizing your qualifications, research interests and motives for applying (maximum 1 page)
  • A Curriculum Vitae and publication list
  • PDF copies of relevant doplomas/certificates and publications
  • Names and contact details of 2 reference persons

For more information, please contact group leader Anders Öhman, Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Neuroscience, anders.ohman@neuro.umu.se

Your complete application, marked with reference number 223-944-13, should be sent as one single pdf-file to medel@diarie.umu.se (state the reference number as subject) no later than September 2, 2013. The position will remain open until filled.

We look forward to receiving your application!
