2 Postdoc scholarships in Cancer Biology with focus on the EMT process at Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine

Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine (UCMM) (www.ucmm.umu.se) is an interdisciplinary research centre with several research groups that study areas of biological and medical relevance. Two Postdoctoral Scholarships are available in the laboratory of Prof. Lena Gunhaga at the University of Umeå, Sweden. The lab is experienced in dissecting molecular mechanisms regulating various neurobiological processes (e.g. Sjödal et al., Dev. Cell, 2007; Pandit et al., Development 2015). We are now seeking highly motivated applicants for scholarships in the fields of cancer biology and molecular biology in relation to developmental biology. The ideal candidates are expected to act both independently and as part of an interactive team.
The scholarships are for 1 year with the possibility for 1 year extension.
Starting date: As soon as possible
The main focus is to understand the molecular mechanisms that control the epithelial-to-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) process. The project will use developmental biology processes as model systems to study EMT, with the possibility to validate our results in established in vitro and in vivo cancer models. The applicant will use functional experiments such as cell and tissue cultures, as well as chick in ovo electroporations and analysing relevant mice mutants. The studies involve common developmental and molecular biology methods like; immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, qRT-PCR, statistical analyses and image preparations, as well as evaluation of RNAseq data.
The ideal candidates should be PhDs with a background in cancer, molecular or developmental biology, and passed an animal research course. A thorough theoretical and practical grounding in molecular and cell biology is a prerequisite. Practical experience with functional cancer (EMT) models, vertebrate embryonic model systems, molecular and cell biology methods, live imaging and RNA-seq is an advantage. The applicants should be proficient in written and spoken English, and have good computer skills (Word, Photoshop, Excel). Of importance are also good organizational, independence, cooperation and problem solving skills.
An international postdoctoral training in the field of Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology or similar is a merit.
