Project description
The Departments of Computing Science, Physics, and Applied Physics and Electronics make, with the support of the Kempe Foundations, a joint research effort on autonomous systems for industry and society.

Autonomous systems refer to autonomous artifacts and large-scale self-managing systems consisting of physical infrastructure and software that together with humans provide increased functionality, sustainability, and efficiency, e.g., self-driving cars, service robots, cognitive agents, smart transportation systems, smart power grids, and cloud infrastructures.

The development of autonomous systems requires multidisciplinary research, as the systems cannot be developed in isolation from the areas in which they will operate. A prerequisite is that the systems are able to monitor and learn about the state of the system and its environment. Based on fundamental monitoring information, the system should, e.g., through artificial intelligence (including machine learning and logic based systems), robotics, feedback control, and optimization, make decisions on what and when various actions should be performed. Just as humans need to collaborate, interact, and learn, autonomous systems need to have or establish similar abilities, in order to interact with humans as well as other systems.

In order to strengthen Umeå University’s research in autonomous systems, and to exploit synergy effects among relevant research groups within different disciplines, this effort is addressing eight research areas with autonomous systems as the common denominator. The project is also foreseen to have positive synergy effects with Umeå University’s participation in The Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP).

Realtime physics-based computer vision for crane manipulators (PI: Martin Servin)

Autonomous resource allocation for rack-scale systems (PI: Johan Tordsson)

Each stipend is for two years with a starting date to be negotiated. The stipend, provided by the Kempe Foundations, amounts to 300 000 SEK per year and is not subject to tax.

Requirements
A qualified applicant for each stipend is required to have a PhD degree in an area of relevance for the respective project. We refer to the individual adverts for specific details.
