Umeå University strong in Shanghai ranking list

[2012-08-16] In this year's Shanghai annual global ranking of universities, Umeå University is listed among the world's top 300. There were a total of 11 Swedish institutes listed in the highly respected publication.

The ranking list, which is formally titled the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), is conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. They have evaluated 1200 global instititions of higher education and the top 500 are included in the list. The ranking is based on several factors including the number of Nobel Prize winners and field medals, number of highly cited researchers, number of articles published in the journals Nature och Science.

Umeå University was placed among the best 201 to 300 universities in the world, and 6 to 7 among Swedish universities included in the list.

In the spring of 2012, Umeå University was ranked among the world's best by two international ranking systems, at #23 and #30. In addition, Umeå University was ranked as the best Swedish and Scandinavian university. These lists focused on young universities with great promise for the future.
