Umeå University celebrates the 14th annual Sami Week!
Sami Week 2013 will be held in Umeå during Saturday the 2rd to Sunday the 10th of March. Many fantastic festivities and events will commemorate the rich culture of the indigenous people of northern Europe. Umeå University will contribute with a symposium of open lectures, a workshop about indigenous health, a concert with electropop artist Lovisa Negga and more.

The Sami week - Ubmejen biejvieh - is organised by Såhkie, the Umeå Sami Association. The celebration includes: concerts, art exhibitions, theatre, film, dance, yoik (traditional Sami song), workshops, food, children’s activities, lectures, seminars and much more.

Sunday 3 March
Inauguration

Vaartoe, the Centre for Sami Research at Umeå University, will award two grants worth SEK 10,000 each to two students for the best paper or thesis. The students will hold a short presentation about their research.
Wednesday 6 March
Lectures: Lars Thomasson Symposium
Time: 10.00 – 17.00
Place: Västerbotten museum
The Centre for Sami research, Vaartoe, at Umeå University organises in cooperation with Västerbotten Museum and Umeå Sami Association a day full of interesting researchers and lecturers.
The lectures are divided into three blocks: Sami societal transformations, challenges in Indigenous research - Experiences from Aboriginal Australia, San Botswana, and Swedish Sápmi, and reindeer adaptation over time.
Lecture: Who is telling whose history for whom?

Place: The Research Archives, Umeå University library
Ernst Manker (1893-1972) was for many years employed as director of the ”Lappish Department” at the Nordic Museum and wrote a number of books about the Sami culture. Ethnologist Eva Silvén from the Nordic Museum talks about Ernst Manker, his museum work and Sami research.

Songs and stories: Juoigiid searvi joik
Time: 19.00
Place: Tráhppie, Gammlia
An evening with traditional Sami singing and stories, including participants from the Centre for Sami Research at Umeå University and the University of Botswana's equivalent center for indigenous research (Research Centre for San Studies).
Friday 8 March
Workshop: Indigenous health and health in remote areas
Time:8.30 – 12.00
Place: University Hospital, NUS 1D - Tandläkarhögskolan
The Centre for Sami Research and the Arctic Centre (Arcum) at Umeå University arranged this workshop about indigenous health and health in rural areas. Researchers from Australia and Sweden will participate.

Culture on Campus presents Lovisa Negga, an electropop artist with French & Sami heritage from Linköping.
