Umeå Arts Campus
Umeå Arts Campus brings together the university's art colleges by the banks of the Umeå River: Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå Institute of Design and Umeå Academy of Fine Arts. It also includes Bildmuseet – the university's museum of contemporary art and visual culture, the digital experimental workshop HumLab-X and the dynamic "Sliperiet" incubator which opens next year.
"Umeå Arts Campus is the single largest project in Umeå University's history since its founding in 1965," says Lena Gustafsson, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University. "The goal is for Umeå to become a creative centre on the world map."
The educational level at Umeå Arts Campus is of the highest excellence. Umeå School of Architecture is the first architectural school in Sweden with an artistic profile. Umeå Institute of Design has been at the top of many international rankings. Umeå Academy of Arts has a focus on the individual artistic expression and the art critical potential of art.
"We are very hopeful that synergy effects will arise from the
campus. It will be a power center where the whole is greater than
its constituent parts," says Kjell Jonsson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor
and chairman of the steering group for Umeå Arts Campus.
"At the same time, it is important that Umeå Arts Campus does
not take on a life of its own – it is part of Umeå University and we
want to increase the level of collaboration with the other parts
of the university as well," continues Kjell Jonsson. "All of the different parts should benefitfrom the initiative."
New buildings to complement the older structures
The first new building being constructed is the Umeå School of Architecture, which was established in 2009.
Umeå University’s museum of contemporary art and visual culture- Bildmuseet - will relocate to a modern new building here, as well as a new branch of HUMlab (HUMlab X) which will be a experimental workshop in digital culture. Bildmuseet is open to the public and an exciting place to visit.
All of the new buildings are designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration wit White arkitekter.
Opening in May 2012
Bildmuseet had an "advance opening" on the 19th of May, and the entire Umeå Arts Campus had its official grand opening on 25-26 May19. It was not only a opening of a place but also an ambition.
The objective is for Umeå Arts Campus to function as a venue for education, research and professional activities within architecture, design, art and digital culture - a creative environment which can be quite unique to Sweden, Europe and even worldwide.
A total of SEK 350 million will be invested over a six years period towards Umeå Arts Campus, including SEK 36.6 million from the Baltic Group donation trust fund.
The 'Sliperiet' Incubator for companies in the creative industries
There will also be a business incubator for the creative industries to help entrepreneurs and promote entrepreneurship by providing active and customized business support, office services, technical and commercial networks, and financial support - all in a creative environment. The incubator at Umeå Arts Campus will be similar to Umeå Biotech Incubator (UBI), as it will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Uminova Innovation.
Umeå Arts Campus is also included as part of the investment towards Umeå's European Capital of Culture 2014 venture. The aim is for is the campus to be a stimulating and exciting meeting place for residents and visitors.
