About the course

This course is part of a national project run by a network of Swedish universities known as USI. The Communicative Variation course is a partnership between the Universities of Gothenburg, Lund and Umeå. The course is based on the following themes with a special focus on Rome: definitions of written, oral and semiotic communication, changes in communication structures due to social and political changes and context-determined interaction – communicative creativity in everyday situations (language, gestures, mimicry).

The course is aimed at students with a first-cycle degree with a major in subjects such as communication, modern or classical languages, linguistics, journalism, media and communication studies, teacher education, literature and philosophy (or equivalent subjects from foreign universities) and will prepare students for further academic studies (i.e. a PhD) or for a professional career in the field of communication.

The course begins with a two-day introductory session at Umeå university, followed by introductory course modules which include individual preparatory work by the students and project and field work in Rome during two weeks.
