About the course

The focus is on the understanding of statistical reasoning in analysis of data and research. The course starts with a general discussion of the role of probability and statistics in scientific method. Basic study designs and sampling methods are outlined. Types and structures of data are discussed e.g. quantitative and categorical data and different measurement levels. Next step is basic description of data in tables, graphs and measures. The concepts of probability and inference are introduced with emphasis on hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. Different types of analysis are discussed such as comparing two or several groups and analyzing relationships between variables. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests are described and calculation of sample size is discussed. Epidemiological research articles will be discussed with focus on the statistical methodology. During the whole course theoretical parts will be illustrated with practical exercises for the students in a statistical software program. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is expected to; have knowledge about relevant statistical terminology and the role of statistics as a scientific method; recognize different types and structures of data and be able to summarize data in tables, graphs and measures; understand basic statistical concepts about probability and inference with emphasis on hypothesis testing and confidence intervals; be able to use a statistical software for basic statistical analysis; be able to perform appropriate statistical analyses concerning comparisons of groups and relationship between variables and be able to interpret the result of such analyses; understand the content of basic statistical methodology in scientific epidemiological articles.

Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars, assignments and group exercises. Seminars, assignments and group exercises are compulsory. All teaching is in English.
