Advanced Materials, 7.5 Credits
About the course
This course deals with the properties of advanced materials and nanomaterials which are relevant to a range of novel technical applications (e.g. organic electronics, photovoltaics, nanofabrication, biomimetics, etc.). Some of the topics covered are the mechanical, optical, thermal and electrical properties of several technologically important materials, e.g. carbon nanotubes, graphene, semiconducting polymers, metals etc. Emphasis is given to the nanostructure/properties relationships and their use in various advanced technological applications. For example, we will discuss the differences between crystalline (ordered) and amorphous (disordered) materials and how their nanostructure gives rise to specific properties in a number of technologically advanced materials (polymers, metals, composites, semiconductors, carbon nanotubes, graphene, etc.). We will also discuss why and how these materials are used in these applications, and which methods are currently used to produce devices with nanoscale dimensions (nanotechnology).
