Master's Programme in Marketing, 120 Credits

About the programme

This programme is given by Umeå School of Business and Economics. The objective of this programme is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the role of marketing in the overall corporate strategy, knowledge of consumer behaviour and competitive analysis, and experience in making executive-level decisions in the area of marketing management. The program emphasizes the application of marketing theory and hands-on experience in designing and implementing market strategies in competitive environments through the balanced use of cases, the state-of-the-art online simulation, modeling tools, and actual fieldwork experience.

Level of education: Continuation programme
Degree: Students may still choose to finish with a Degree of Master of Science (60hp) after one year. If students continue the full two years they will graduate with a Degree of Master of Science (120hp). Application and eligibility Programme syllabus

Instruction

During the first year, the main focus of the programme is on developing the knowledge within the main subject, marketing. This development is achieved through modules in strategy and strategic planning, consumer behaviour and market analysis. In lectures and seminars the students will get a theoretical foundation which will be applied to cases and projects. During the first year it is also possible to complement the studies in marketing with other elective subjects.

The second year includes a compulsory methodological course and a course outlining recent trends in the field of your specialization. Apart from this, the student is supposed to deepen their knowledge in a supplementary area, such as Business development, Management or Finance. The studies also involve the writing of one 30 hp thesis/ two 15 hp thesis. The entire program is given in English.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the programme will have acquired knowledge suitable for a career in the area of marketing both as generalists and as specialists. They will be able to plan, implement and evaluate both strategic and operational marketing decisions. Employers who need candidates with analytical and managerial capacity in today’s competitive markets fill find the programme graduates attractive. The international character of the program also provides a good opportunity to seek a career abroad and in major international companies or organizations. Graduates are also eligible to apply for PhD studies after the first year.
