Degree and careerMaster's Programme in Economics, 120 Credits

When you have studied at the Master's Program in Economics for one year (60 ECTS) or two year (120 ECTS) a Master Degree - 1 year, or a Master Degree - 2 year, will be avaliable for you. This page lists the different degree criterias and also describes the future career.

Degree criterias

When graduating from the Master's Program in Economics, the following requirements must be fulfilled.

Master of Arts/Science (1 year/60 credits) (Magisterexamen)

• 60 credits in completed courses (one year of full-time studies) of which at least 45 credits are second cycle courses (advanced level).
• At least 30 credits of completed second cycle courses must be courses in Economics
• Within those 30 credits a Master Thesis of at least 15 credits must be completed.

Master of Arts/Science (2 year/120 credits) (Masterexamen)

• 120 credits in completed courses (two years of full-time studies) of which at least 90 credits are second cycle courses (advanced level).
• At least 60 credits of completed second cycle courses must be courses in Economics
• Within those 60 credits a Master Thesis of at least 30 credits (or two of 15 credits each) must be completed.

Career

The future career as an economist allows you to choose among various paths. Many of our students are striving for a future within research and applies for a PhD position after graduating from the Master Program. At Umeå University we normally recruits 3-5 new PhD-candidates each year and a majority of those have studied at our Master's Program.

Other options for an Economist is to work as an expert in the public sector, to work for the central bank or the government but also to to work in the private sector. If you are interested in financial economics will the program prepare you well for a future within this sector of the economy.
