Frequently asked questionsMaster's Programme in Molecular Biology, 120 Credits
1 I’m interested in your Master’s programme in molecular biology, what are the requirements?
2 I’m interested in your Master’s programme in molecular biology, how do I apply?
Follow the link below and click the Apply button, you will be transferred to our national application system where you apply to courses and programmes. At the application site you can find a lot of useful information regarding the application process.
http://www.umu.se/english/education/courses-and-programmes/programme?currentView=registration&code=NAMOM
3 When is the application period open?
The application period for Swedish citizens is usually in March (for Fall semester admission) and in September (for Spring semester admission). Application period for non-Swedish citizens is usually in December–January and June–August respectively.
If you’re a non-Swedish student and missed the international deadline you can apply in the Swedish round. Note that the admission site is in Swedish and that you might need help in applying (contact studievagledare@molbiol.umu.se). Students outside of EU/EEA might have problems getting a residence permit on time if applying in the Swedish round. More detailed dates can be found at: http://www.umu.se/english/education/master/deadlines
You can do a late application after the application period is closed, see Question 10.
4 Do I need to pay application and tuition fee for studies in Sweden?
Citizens of EU/EEA and Switzerland can study in Sweden without tuition fees. Students outside of these areas are required to pay application and tuition fee for university studies. More information on tuition and application fees: http://www.umu.se/english/education/tuition
5 I paid the application fee too late, will my application be deleted?
No, but your application will be regarded as late. If you are eligible for the programme you will be placed after the on-time applicants and will be admitted if there is still open positions at the programme, after the original admissions.
6 I’m from a country outside of EU/EEA or Switzerland but am living in Sweden. I have a residence permit for other reasons than studies; do I have to pay tuition fees?
No. More information about exemptions from tuition fee can be found here:
https://www.antagning.se/en/All-you-need-to-know1/Studying-in-Sweden/Fees-and-scholarships/Am-I-required-to-pay/
7 When do I have to pay the first instalment of the tuition fee?
We strongly recommend that you pay your tuition fee as soon as possible after you have received your invoice due to the fact that the Swedish Migration Board will not process your application for residence permit until the tuition fees for the first semester has been paid. More information here:
http://www.umu.se/english/education/tuition/terms-of-payment
8 Are there scholarships to apply to?
There are a few scholarships, read more here:
http://www.umu.se/english/education/tuition/scholarships
https://www.antagning.se/en/All-you-need-to-know1/Studying-in-Sweden/Fees-and-scholarships/Scholarships/
9 Do I have to apply for residence permit?
If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen coming to study in Umeå for less than three months then in most cases you will need a visa. If you intend to stay for more than three months you will need to obtain a residence permit in order to stay in Sweden. You must apply for a visa or permit before you arrive in Sweden. More information: http://www.umu.se/english/umea/getting-to/visas.
10 I missed the application deadline, what should I do?
You can make a late application the same way as an on-time application is done. If you fulfil the requirements you will be admitted if there are open positions on the programme, after the original admission.
11 What can I do to fulfil the requirements for being admitted to the Master’s programme in molecular biology when I already have a bachelor degree that does not make me qualify?
We know that many students may have a bachelor degree that does not make them qualified for the Master in molecular biology. You may be able to study at Umeå University for 2 years and get the master anyhow. For example: if you only have 15 ECTS credits of chemistry in your bachelor degree, then you can apply for a 15 ECTS credits chemistry course here at Umeå University. While you are taking that course you apply for the Master’s programme next time the application opens. Then you start the programme and take courses and do degree thesis project so that your total credits during the programme are 165 ECTS credits. You are allowed to include a total of 30 credits of courses in any subject and at any level so therefore you can include the chemistry course in your master degree. In this way you do not need to study any extra time in order to get your master degree in molecular biology. If you instead do not meet the requirement for e.g. plant biology you may of course instead take a plant course. If you are interested in this option please contact studievagledare@molbiol.umu.se that can suggest courses for you.
12 I have a question that is not covered here, who can I contact?
You can send an email to the study counsellor at the department of molecular biology; studievagledare@molbiol.umu.se
Tuition fees and scholarships
With a few exceptions, all citizens of countries outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees for education at undergraduate and advanced level.
For most degree programmes rates are SEK 90,000–135,000 per year. Programmes in architecture, design, and fine arts range from SEK 270,000 to SEK 330,000 per year.
Umeå University offers a limited number of scholarships to students from outside the EU/EEA.
The Swedish Institute administers numerous scholarships each year for students and researchers coming to Sweden.
