What’s it like to study at Umeå University?
Studying at Umeå University is really great! The university system here is much different than the system in Canada. In Umeå you study only one course at a time. You take one class, usually about a month long, write the exam and then start the next class. I really enjoy this system of study, and I like being able to focus on one subject at a time in depth. There is also more group work here.
Your impression of Umeå and the surrounding areas?
Umeå is a very nice city. It’s a university city with lots of students around, which makes it a really fun place to live. The city is a perfect size; it is small enough that it is easy to get around, but big enough so there is always something to do. Within the city there are lots of running and cross country ski trails, bike paths, a nice lake, many parks and lots of trees. The area surrounding Umeå is beautiful, with lots of untouched nature. There are great opportunities around Umeå for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and mountain biking.
What you like best about the town of Umeå and its surroundings?
I love being able to bike everywhere. Umeå has a great network of bike paths; all you need to get around here is a bike! I have enjoyed all of the camping and outdoor trips I have been on in the lovely Swedish wilderness. There are a lot of international students in Umeå. It has been fantastic meeting people from all over the world and learning about so many different cultures! The locals here are friendly and helpful.
What you would say to another international student thinking of attending Umeå University?
Definitely come to Umeå if you get the chance! It’s a fantastic experience that you will never forget! Umeå is a great place and I have met some amazing people here. It’s a great adventure to live in another country and experience a new culture. It can be challenging at first, but it gets a lot better and it is so worth it. I’m having the best time in Umeå, and I know you will too!
