About the programme

If you have a bachelor degree in biology and wish to get a more advanced knowledge in ecology to increase your possibilities to get an advanced job within companies and governments or the merit yourself for future studies as a PhD student, the master programme in ecology is something for you.

The master programme in ecology will give you an advanced knowledge of ecological theory necessary for planning and executing research and nature conservation. The education is closely linked to the research conducted at the department of Ecology and Environmental Science. Most of the practical exercises have their focus on northern ecosystems but the education is still highly international since general theory and global environmental problems like overfishing, forestry, river regulations, pollution and climate changes are central themes in many courses.

The programme gives skills to identify and characterize ecological problems plan and execute investigations and determine and study biological material. You will also learn how to analyze data statistically and how to present and interpret the results in a report. All courses in the master programme are given in English.

Instruction

The master programme in ecology at Umeå University is given by the department of Ecology and Environmental Science (EMG) and is closely linked to the research conducted at the department. As a master student in ecology in Umeå, you will develop your skills for individual integration and application of knowledge, and the ability to handle complex phenomena, problems and situations, as a preparation for research practice or other jobs that have high demands of self dependence.

Students are admitted to the programme once a year. The programme includes courses covering a total of 120 ECTS-credits taken during two years, and it entirely located to Umeå. The included courses combine theoretical studies with field or laboratory practice. The degree thesis is to be carried out at the university, or at some enterprise or government.

As the first course you can chose between Forest Ecology and Aquatic Ecology. You will also read Ecological Dynamics and Analyses of Ecological Data. In addition to that, you will chose between a number of different ecological courses on advanced level and up to 30 ECTS in other subjects.

Career Opportunities

The master program in ecology gives you knowledge and skills for advanced work in governments, companies and is an excellent base for PhD studies.

Students are admitted to the program once a year. After all necessary courses have been passed; the program qualifies for the degree Master of Science with a Major in Ecology at Umeå University.

Tuition fees and scholarships

With a few exceptions, all citizens of countries outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees for education at undergraduate and advanced level.
For most degree programmes rates are SEK 90,000–135,000 per year. Programmes in architecture, design, and fine arts range from SEK 270,000 to SEK 330,000 per year.

Umeå University offers a limited number of scholarships to students from outside the EU/EEA.

The Swedish Institute administers numerous scholarships each year for students and researchers coming to Sweden.
