Doctoral Studies

Are you interested in learning more and deepening your knowledge of a particular field of study? Are you interested in the contributing to the production of new knowledge? If this is the case, then doctoral studies at Umeå University is for you!

Doctoral studies involves four years of full-time study, which includes a number of courses and a thesis. Besides acquiring in-depth knowledge of a field of study, you will also cultivate your critical and analytical thinking. During your studies you get to solve problems independently as you prepare for a professional career within academia, business or the public sector.

To be accepted as a doctoral student you are required:

  • to fulfil the entrance qualifications for the subject in question, or
  • to show that you have other abilities that are necessary to complete the education

If you are interested in commencing doctoral studies you should first contact the department that conducts education and research in your field of interest. The Admissions Code for doctoral studies contains the rules that Umeå University adheres to for application, qualification and selection. More information can be found on the faculties' homepages and in the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education's Handbook for Postgraduate Students. There you will find more detailed information and links to the current legislation that regulates doctoral studies at Swedish universities.
