How to Obtain a Student ID

From the 1st of July 2010 there is no longer an obligation to be a member of a student union in Sweden

Although, a membership in a student union will provide you with a student ID card that gives you access to student discounts and student pubs. If you want to be a member of a student union you should, as soon as possible after your arrival, go to the student union associated to your department, pay your Student Union Fee and collect your Student Union Receipt. Your Student Union Receipt will function as your Student ID until you receive your proper Student ID. The fee is about 300 SEK per term, depending on which student union and section you belong to. You have to show your Letter of Admission/Letter of Acceptance when you register at the Student Union.

Three Different Student Unions

Medical Sciences Student Union (Faculty of Medicine & Odontology).

Umeå Union of Students (Faculties of Social Sciences, Arts & Teacher Education).

What do you get When you pay your Student Union Fee?

The National Student Card helps you to gain access to the student pubs. It also qualifies you for discounts on train- and flight tickets, and in some shops in Umeå. Further discounts can be available with some taxi companies, some of the clubs in town and at IKSU. Within a month of paying your student union fee you will receive a plastic student card in the mail.
