Welcome to Science without Borders at Umeå University

Umeå University welcomes qualified students from Brazil as part of the Science without Borders (Ciência sem Fronteiras) programme beginning in September 2013.

Science without Borders is a Brazilian Government scholarship programme which aims to send 100,000 Brazilians in overseas higher education institutions over the next four years to study in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and creative industries at universities across the world.

During the 2013 and 2014, higher education institutions in Sweden will welcome a total of over 2,000 Brazilian students. Seats will beavailable at the undergraduate and postgraduate (master) level.

What does Umeå University offer for Brazilian students?

  • Housing Guarantee - All arriving students from Brazil will be offered a guaranteed residence assignment via our International Housing Office (IHO).
  • Course in English Proficiency - The course is primarily aimed at improving the students' oral and written language proficiency.
  • Swedish Culture and Language course - The aim of the courses is to make it easier for the participants to manage in the Swedish society during their temporary stay in Sweden.
  • Complimentary Insurance Coverage - Visiting students from Brazil will be provided with medical, dental, accidental and home transport if necessary.

  • Second academic term (spring): Monday 20 January 2014 - Sunday 8 June 2014

General Conditions

The period of the scholarship is up to 12 months. It is a one year non-degree program, as students will return to complete their degrees in Brazil. It is hoped they will also engage in a summer internship.

Students will be selected through calls for proposals, which will be announced by CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior) and CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico). Brazilian universities will submit their top students selected on a merit basis which meet the requirements for each type of scholarship. The candidates will also have to prove they have enough knowledge of the language required.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

The student must have completed at least 60% of the studies planned for your degree program at the time for the planned beginning of the scholarship period.

English Proficiency

The student must present TOEFL test (Test of English as Foreign Language) in the modalities iBT (Internet Based Test), minimum score of 90 points (no band under 21) or PBT (Paper Based Test), minimum score of points, 575 or IELTS minimum score of 6.5 points (no band less than 5,5), performed sometime after August 1, 2010.
