Science without Borders - Computational Physics

In computational physics computing is used to solve complex physical problems that can't be solved with analytical methods. Computational physics is commonly used for industrial purposes, for example to make computer simulations to test the properties of a product before it is put up for production.

The course package in Computational Physics will make you familiar with different methods for calculation and simulation. You will learn modern programming tools efficiently, knowledge useful also outside the field of physics.

The course package in computational physics is flexible and offers many different study paths to serve the interests of the individual student, hence the programme is well adapted to different career opportunities. Successful students are also offered a possibility to do a larger project (15 credits) during the second half of the programme.

In collaboration with the Departments of Mathematics and Ecology, the Department of Physics runs IceLab (Integrated scienCE Lab), a creative environment at Umeå University for integrating science from different fields, such as physics, mathematics, ecology, and sociology, with computation as the common denominator. Students are encouraged to contact IceLab for a project work.

Another interdisciplinary computer-based institute at Umeå University is UMIT Research Lab, which focuses on applied information technology."
