To advance our understanding of the pathophysiology and develop effective interventions, experimental models are required that closely mimic human biology. In particular, organoid platforms have begun to address key limitations of 2D cell line cultures and animal models in infectious disease research. In this talk, Dr. Pan will present the diverse applications of human organoids in investigating organ-specific infections and disease manifestations across major physiological systems, as well as the applications for antiviral drug discovery. This talk will focus on representative pathogens, including hepatitis E virus, monkeypox virus, Oropouche virus and measles virus. Finally, Dr. Pan will further discuss the innovation of immune-augmented organoids for modelling complex virus-host interactions, better understanding pathophysiology, and developing multi-target therapeutics.

About IBBS:

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-04T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-04T15:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Medchem Seminar Series - Hanna Wacklin-Knecht

Title: TBA

<atom:content type="html">
Speaker:

Hanna Wacklin-Knecht

Head of Scientific Support Division, European Spallation Source ERIC, Lund

Title:

TBA

More information about the MedChem Seminar Series and the schedule is here.
</atom:content><place>KB.E3.01 (Lilla hörsalen), KBC</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-08T15:15:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-08T16:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Sara Olsson - Medical Science

Reconciliation through transitional support in adult diabetes care: perspectives of young adults with type 1 diabetes, parents, and diabetes nurses

<atom:content type="html">
Sara Olsson, Department of Nursing, defends her thesis titled "Reconciliation in transition friendly support after the transfer to adult diabetes care:

Perspectives of emerging adults living with type 1 diabetes, parents, and diabetes specialist nurses".

Principal supervisor: Åsa Hörnsten
</atom:content><place>Aula Biologica</place><type>Defence of doctoral thesis</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-11T13:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-11T16:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

SSIBS seminar: Bo Dong

Bo Dong from Ocean University of China, lectures within the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Seminars.

<atom:content type="html">
Identification of endogenous TH synthesis precursor and environmentally chemical attractant molecule for marine ascidian larvae settlement and metamorphosis

Speaker: Bo Dong, Ocean University of China, China

Host: Sun Nyunt Wai, Department of Molecular Biology, UCMR

About the lecture:

Marine ascidians belong to the tunicates and sit at a key evolutionary node between invertebrates and vertebrates, making them as living fossils for studying evolutionary developmental biology. The tadpole larvae of ascidian show distinct vertebrate-like morphological features, however, they lose important vertebrate organs like the brain, CNS, and notochord after metamorphosis. In this talk, I will introduce our recent findings on identification of the protein precursor for thyroid hormone synthesis in ascidian. This protein is a first-identified TH precursor outside vertebrates, playing essential roles on larvae metamorphosis. Except this endogenous regulatory molecule, we also identified an external environmental factor that trigger marine ascidian larvae settlement and metamorphogesis. I will discuss the implications of our studies in the emerging field of marine Eco-Evo-Devo research by establishing a model system for understanding developmental mechanisms in the context of marine ecosystems and aquaculture. Of interest is the potential development of antifouling strategies by targeting specific chemosensation.

About IBSS:

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-18T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-18T15:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

SSIBS seminar: Shohei Hori

Shohei Hori, Tokyo University in Japan, lectures within the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Seminars.

<atom:content type="html">
Control of regulatory T cell development and function by the transcription factor Foxp3

Speaker: Shohei Hori, Tokyo University, Japan

Host: Ryo Morimoto, Department of Molecular Biology, MIMS

About the lecture:

Regulatory T (Treg) cells are central guardians of immune tolerance and tissue homeostasis. This notion is firmly supported by the finding that defective Treg development and function, caused by mutations in the Foxp3 gene, lead to devastating autoimmune diseases in both mice and humans. However, the molecular mechanisms that establish the epigenetic, transcriptional, and functional identity of Treg cells remain incompletely understood. Although Foxp3 has long been regarded as the master transcription factor of Treg cells, earlier studies suggested that its role in shaping their heterogeneous epigenetic and transcriptional landscapes might be limited or indirect. Our recent findings challenge this view. Using complementary gain- and loss-of-function approaches, we demonstrate that Foxp3 plays a more fundamental and direct role than previously appreciated, integrating cell-intrinsic states and environmental contexts to drive epigenetic and transcriptional programs that define Treg cell identity and function. Acting as a master yet context-dependent regulator, Foxp3 cooperates with signal-dependent transcription factors, including BATF, to coordinate the epigenetic and transcriptional programs underlying Treg cell identity and function.

About IBSS

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-25T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-25T15:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Basic Course EM September 2026

The course combines fundamental theory with hands-on demonstrations to provide a solid understanding of Electron Microscopy in the biological science

<atom:content type="html">
This course combines fundamental theory with hands-on demonstrations to provide a solid understanding of electron microscopy in biological science. Altered DNA methylation, an epigenetic modification that regulates gene expression, is well documented in Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in ageing. Yet, investigations on the contributions of DNA methylation to dysregulation of specific brain cell types remain limited. In recent years, the Bettencourt lab has been investigating the role of DNA methylation on the dysregulation of oligodendrocyte and myelin-related genes across neurodegenerative diseases, and how these changes may impact gene expression. Our DNA methylomic studies cover a range of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementias, Parkinson’s disease and multiples system atrophy. Our findings suggest that oligodendrocyte-associated DNA methylation changes occur early across neurodegenerative diseases.

About IBSS:

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-10-02T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-10-02T15:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

How to make systematic reviews

This course will give you an introduction to systematic reviews, with a focus on systematic searching.

<atom:content type="html">
Systematic reviews are becoming more and more common within multiple disciplines. KBC DAYS 2026 with the main scientific theme "Dynamic Worlds: Responses and Transformations from Molecules to Landscapes" will take place on 10-11 November 2026 - save the date!

With the scientific theme Dynamic Worlds, we invite participants to explore how systems across scales—from atoms, molecules and cells to organisms, ecosystems, and landscapes—sense, respond to, and are transformed by internal and external excitations. Beyond time resolved change, dynamics is understood here as the interplay of interactions, constraints, and signals that shape systems across scales.

Dynamic Worlds provides a unifying framework for interdisciplinary research within the Chemical Biological Centre, fostering dialogue across life and materials sciences. By highlighting shared mechanisms and consequences of change in complex systems, the theme aims to inspire new connections, perspectives, and collaborations across different research fields.

Stay tuned for more information and the programme.

Registration to open in September 2026.

Contact: info.kbc@umu.se

More information:

Find our more about the Chemical Biological Centre and former KBC DAYS conferences

Organiser: Chemical Biological Centre (KBC)
</atom:content><place>Carl Kempe salen, KBC building</place><type>Conference</type>
<startdatum>2026-11-10T09:00:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-11-11T17:00:00+01:00</slutdatum>

SSIBS seminar: Mirjam Münch

Mirjam Münch, Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Basel, Switzerland, lectures within the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Seminars.

<atom:content type="html">
What do we know about the effects of light on human health?

Speaker: Mirjam Münch, Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Basel, Switzerland

Host: Katharina Wulff, Department of Molecular Biology

About the lecture:

There is growing evidence that light is essential for human health and well-being. Beyond vision, light influences a wide range of physiological and behavioural processes through non-visual pathways via the eye, including sleep–wake regulation, circadian rhythms, cognitive performance, mood, and metabolic function. However, many fundamental questions remain unanswered. We still do not know the optimal dose, timing, duration, or spectral composition of light exposure required to promote different health outcomes, nor do we fully understand the mechanisms linking acute and chronic light exposure to physical and mental health beyond circadian regulation.
A major challenge is to account for the substantial inter-individual variability in responses to light. Factors such as age, sex, chronotype, genetics, skin pigmentation, pre-existing health conditions, occupation, and geographical location all influence how individuals respond to light exposure.
This presentation will summarize some aspects of the current state of knowledge, highlight key research gaps, and provide examples of how emerging evidence is being translated into practical applications.

About IBSS

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-11-13T14:00:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-11-13T15:00:00+01:00</slutdatum>

How to make systematic reviews

This course will give you an introduction to systematic reviews, with a focus on systematic searching.

<atom:content type="html">
Systematic reviews are becoming more and more common within multiple disciplines.
