To advance our understanding of the pathophysiology and develop effective interventions, experimental models are required that closely mimic human biology. In particular, organoid platforms have begun to address key limitations of 2D cell line cultures and animal models in infectious disease research. In this talk, Dr. Pan will present the diverse applications of human organoids in investigating organ-specific infections and disease manifestations across major physiological systems, as well as the applications for antiviral drug discovery. This talk will focus on representative pathogens, including hepatitis E virus, monkeypox virus, Oropouche virus and measles virus. The tadpole larvae of ascidian show distinct vertebrate-like morphological features, however, they lose important vertebrate organs like the brain, CNS, and notochord after metamorphosis. In this talk, I will introduce our recent findings on identification of the protein precursor for thyroid hormone synthesis in ascidian. This protein is a first-identified TH precursor outside vertebrates, playing essential roles on larvae metamorphosis. Except this endogenous regulatory molecule, we also identified an external environmental factor that trigger marine ascidian larvae settlement and metamorphogesis. I will discuss the implications of our studies in the emerging field of marine Eco-Evo-Devo research by establishing a model system for understanding developmental mechanisms in the context of marine ecosystems and aquaculture. This notion is firmly supported by the finding that defective Treg development and function, caused by mutations in the Foxp3 gene, lead to devastating autoimmune diseases in both mice and humans. However, the molecular mechanisms that establish the epigenetic, transcriptional, and functional identity of Treg cells remain incompletely understood. Although Foxp3 has long been regarded as the master transcription factor of Treg cells, earlier studies suggested that its role in shaping their heterogeneous epigenetic and transcriptional landscapes might be limited or indirect. Our recent findings challenge this view. Using complementary gain- and loss-of-function approaches, we demonstrate that Foxp3 plays a more fundamental and direct role than previously appreciated, integrating cell-intrinsic states and environmental contexts to drive epigenetic and transcriptional programs that define Treg cell identity and function. Altered DNA methylation, an epigenetic modification that regulates gene expression, is well documented in Alzheimer&amp;rsquo;s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in ageing. Yet, investigations on the contributions of DNA methylation to dysregulation of specific brain cell types remain limited. In recent years, the Bettencourt lab has been investigating the role of DNA methylation on the dysregulation of oligodendrocyte and myelin-related genes across neurodegenerative diseases, and how these changes may impact gene expression. Our DNA methylomic studies cover a range of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer&amp;rsquo;s disease, frontotemporal dementias, Parkinson&amp;rsquo;s disease and multiples system atrophy. However, expectations of confidentiality in most editorial proceedings restricts the data available for assessing how well they achieve the scientific community&amp;rsquo;s ideals, or to develop and test theories to improve the process.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In this talk, I will describe a new anonymized dataset comprising the evaluations of 110,303 manuscript submitted over five years at Science and Science Advances, and a detailed analysis of what it tells us about editorial and peer review at elite general science journals. Across both stages, the strongest selective effects are associated with institutional prestige, specific research topics, larger team sizes, and geographic location. Associations are systematically stronger during the initial editorial review. I will conclude by discussing how this two-stage evaluation model presents distinct opportunities to test interventions--such as partial anonymization--and why applying scientific rigor to our own gatekeeping practices is essential to aligning elite publishing with the scientific community's meritocratic ideals.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;About Aaron Clauset&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Aaron Clauset is a Professor of Computer Science, faculty in the BioFrontiers Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder, and External Faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. An internationally recognized expert in network science and complex systems, his research uncovers the fundamental principles that govern surprising patterns in social and biological systems. His pioneering work on networks and rare events have transformed how scientists analyze complex systems. He serves as a Deputy Editor at Science Advances and is an elected Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Network Science Society, as well as recipient of the Erdos&amp;ndash;Renyi Prize in Network Science. He earned his PhD in Computer Science with distinction from the University of New Mexico, where he was recently named a Distinguished Alumnus. KBC DAYS 2026 with the main scientific theme "&lt;strong&gt;Dynamic Worlds: Responses and Transformations from Molecules to Landscapes&lt;/strong&gt;" will take place on &lt;strong&gt;10-11 November 2026&lt;/strong&gt; - &lt;em&gt;save the date&lt;/em&gt;!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;With the scientific theme &lt;em&gt;Dynamic Worlds&lt;/em&gt;, we invite participants to explore how systems across scales&amp;mdash;from atoms, molecules and cells to organisms, ecosystems, and landscapes&amp;mdash;sense, respond to, and are transformed by internal and external excitations. Beyond time resolved change, dynamics is understood here as the interplay of interactions, constraints, and signals that shape systems across scales.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Dynamic Worlds&lt;/em&gt;&amp;nbsp;provides a unifying framework for interdisciplinary research within the Chemical Biological Centre, fostering dialogue across life&amp;nbsp;and materials&amp;nbsp;sciences. The course contents are validation and monitoring of the cleanroom, cleanroom maintenance, gowning, and cleanroom good practice. No entry permission will be given to the cleanroom without attending the cleanroom technology course.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Users should be able to demonstrate during the course that they are able to use the cleanroom correctly and perform measurements in a clean environment in order to gain their Licenses. The License enables the user to book online any special facility in the cleanroom. Beyond vision, light influences a wide range of physiological and behavioural processes through non-visual pathways via the eye, including sleep&amp;ndash;wake regulation, circadian rhythms, cognitive performance, mood, and metabolic function. However, many fundamental questions remain unanswered. We still do not know the optimal dose, timing, duration, or spectral composition of light exposure required to promote different health outcomes, nor do we fully understand the mechanisms linking acute and chronic light exposure to physical and mental health beyond circadian regulation.&lt;br /&gt;A major challenge is to account for the substantial inter-individual variability in responses to light. Therefore it is in wide use in many fields such as; optical coatings, photovoltaic, semiconductor, photo electrochemical cells, optoelectronic, flat panel displays, data storage, super capacitor, gas sensors and many others.
