Listen to short talks by physicists from Umeå University about the fundamental forces that shape our world. This Sunday you will meet Thomas Wågberg and Michael Bradley, both Professors of Physics. Each short lecture will take about 20–25 minutes, and afterwards there will be time for questions.

Energy from Einstein to hydrogen gas
Thomas Wågberg, Professor of Physics

In the sun, marvellous processes occur, where light elements, especially hydrogen, combine into heavier elements such as helium. The energy released can be described by Einstein's most famous equation: E=mc2. The energy from the sun drives in principle all processes on our earth, but mankind has failed through history utilizing the sun's energy to satisfy our energy needs, especially for industrial processes and transport.

At Bildmuseet, Thomas Wågberg will tell you about the different types of energy that we can convert from sunlight. He will describe how processes can be refined so that with the help of the sun and clean water, we can produce hydrogen gas, an excellent fuel that will be part of the solution for a future sustainable society.

Thomas Wågberg is a Professor of Physics at Umeå University, with speciality in nanophysics and materials. He leads the research group "Nano for Energy", which focus on nanomaterials for renewable energy applications.

Black holes, gravitational waves and GPS
Michael Bradley, Professor of Physics

In general relativity gravity is described as curvature of space and time. For weak fields and low speeds, it gives roughly the same result as Newton's gravity theory, but it also predicts several new phenomena. Under extreme conditions, gravity can become so strong that even light is stopped and a black hole is formed. Celestial bodies in relative motion emit gravitational waves which on their journey through the room stretch and compress it.

Observatories have recently measured gravitational waves that formed when gigantic black holes one billion light-years away from Earth merged. The deviations from Newton's theory are usually so tiny that we can ignore them in everyday life, but when positioning with the help of GPS, one needs to take into account that time passes differently at different heights.

Michael Bradley is a Professor of Physics at Umeå University. His research has mainly concerned problems in general relativity, e.g. methods for constructing of solutions to the field
</atom:content><place>Bildmuseet</place><type>Lecture</type>
<startdatum>2019-02-10T14:00:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2019-02-10T15:00:00+01:00</slutdatum>

Popular science in Entangle

Lectures of popular science: "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou quantum" and "Tools made of light.". Both will give their lectures in English, so please bring your English-speaking friends. Each short lecture will take about 20–25 minutes, and afterwards there will be time for questions.

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou quantum? How particles can be apart but still be linked to each other
Claude Dion, Senior Lecturer in Physics
(Lecture language: English)

Like Romeo and Juliet, when two quantum particles meet, their fate becomes intertwined. In some cases, the particles become entangled such that measuring a property on one particle will affect the result obtained for the other particle, even though the properties were not defined before the measurement, and even if the particles are far apart. This puzzled Einstein who didn't appreciate "spooky action at a distance." At Bildmuseet, Claude Dion will present physicists' current understanding of the problem and ponder which of love or quantum mechanics is harder to understand.

Claude Dion is an Associate Professor at Umeå University, and docent in atomic and molecular physics. He teaches, among others, an advanced course in quantum mechanics, where he tries to get his students to appreciate the mysteries of the quantum world.

Tools made of light: The Nobel Prize in Physics 2018
László Veisz, Professor of Physics
(Lecture language: English)

The Nobel Prize in physics in 2018 was awarded for 'tools made of light', ground-breaking inventions in the field of laser physics. The prize covers two fascinating topics: the optical tweezers and the generation of high-intensity ultra-short optical pulses.

Optical tweezers can grab and position small, micrometre-sized objects and have broad range of applications, for example moving cells in biology and medicine. The high-intensity ultra-short pulses provide extreme concentration of light energy into a small spatial volume and temporal duration. This permits also a broad range of novel applications from industrial material processing, eye surgery in medicine, or generation of the shortest pulses in fundamental science. At Bildmuseet, László Veisz will explain the background of these inventions and show how they influence modern life.

László Veisz, is a Professor of Physics at Umeå University and Head of the relativistic attosecond physics laboratory
</atom:content><place>Bildmuseet</place><type>Lecture</type>
<startdatum>2019-02-17T14:00:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2019-02-17T15:00:00+01:00</slutdatum>

Art Friday and Hollywood Physics

Welcome to Art Friday with Umeå physicist Patrik Norqvist which gives a lecture on Hollywood Physics.

<atom:content type="html">
Art Friday with art, Hollywood Physics and a guest DJ. At Bildmuseet, Robin Ekman will talk about the development from the idea of indivisible atoms to the standard model of particle physics. Among other things, he will discuss the nature of matter and light as both wave- and particle-like, the prediction and discovery of anti-matter, and the role of the Higgs particle. We will also hear about some unanswered questions, including why there is so much more matter than anti-matter, and what kinds of undiscovered particles may exist.

Robin Ekman is in his final year as Ph.D. student at Umeå University. His dissertation project is focused on quantum mechanical effects in plasmas. Besides that, his interests are in fundamental and particle physics.

The Dark Side of the Universe
Michael Bradley, Professor of Physics

Michael Bradley's talk at Bildmuseet will focus on the dark side of the universe. He will and tell us about the elusive and thought-provoking phenomena dark energy and dark matter.

The universe started its development from a very dense and hot state, the Big Bang, and has then expanded and cooled. The expansion is still ongoing, but since the universe is influenced by its own gravity, the expansion rate should slowly decrease. On the contrary, observations show that the expansion rate increases, as if some mysterious force is trying to stretch the universe out! The various explanations for this phenomenon usually gather under the term 'dark energy'.

This is not to be confused with 'dark matter'. Studies show that most of the matter of the universe is of a different kind than the stuff we and our surroundings are made of. Dark matter does not interact with light and is therefore invisible, hence the name. Estimates suggest that its total mass is about five times the total mass of "ordinary" matter.

Michael Bradley is a Professor of Physics at Umeå University. His research has mainly concerned problems in general relativity, as for example models for rotating stars and propagation of gravity waves in cosmological models.
</atom:content><place>Bildmuseet</place><type>Lecture</type>
<startdatum>2019-02-24T14:00:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2019-02-24T15:00:00+01:00</slutdatum>

The annual book sale in the museum shop

The annual book sale in the museum shop starts.
