WELCOME TO THE COURSE

Analysis of Field Data

Welcome to the course Analysis of Field Data held by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umeå University. My name is Johan Olofsson and I will serve as course coordinator. If you have any questions regarding the course, please just send me an e-mail (johan.olofsson@umu.se) or contact our study guidance counsellor (maria.karlsson01@umu.se).

How to start

About the course

  • Course information

It is important that you show up on the first day so that we can arrange with login codes for the computers etc. The first day is also important since we will then learn how to handle the computer program that we will use during the course. If you cannot attend on the first day, but still planning to take the course, please send me an email so I know you are coming later.

We will use a program called R. It is a powerful statistical program that is one of the most used statistical packages among scientists. Another good thing is that it is free. It does not cost anything, and you can download it and use it during the course on your own computer if you want to. You will also be able to use it after the course, as long as you have access to a computer. You can download it from the website http://www.r-project.org/.

  • Literature

To learn anything from this course, you will really need the course books. I strongly recommend that you already before the course buy the course book (Statistics an introduction using R by Michael J Crawley). It costs about 300SEK and can be ordered from any of the big internet dealers. It will be needed for the computer exercises. If you do not buy it, the value of the course will be much less valuable for you. It is a really good book that you will have a lot of help from for many years.

  • Recommended arrival times

International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular term, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but not later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme.

If you will have housing through the International Housing Office you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.
