Education is a scientific discipline where knowledge is created about the processes through which the human being is formed and about the changes in social, cultural and historical circumstances in which these processes are embedded. The pedagogical field deals with, for example, different aspects of upbringing, education, learning, teaching and other processes. In sport pedagogy these processes are studied within a sport framework. Questions, for example, can be raised regarding how and why certain values, knowledge and skill arise, how and why they are maintained, and how they vary within and between generations, groups and individuals.

Learning-, teaching- and coaching processes within sports are problematised. Theoretical knowledge about different leadership styles, coaching philosophies and other factors affecting individual and group performances will be taken into practice and analyzed within the sports practice.

Expected learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

• demonstrate knowledge about learning, teaching and coaching within various sports practices
• be acquainted with and demonstrate understanding of factors affecting individual and group performance

Skills and ability

• apply different leadership/coaching methods depending on various demands on individuals and groups
• transform theoretical knowledge into practice and use theoretical content to analyse practice
• perform and analyze different coaching skills through various leadership experiences

Values and attitudes

• reflect on their own leadership style in relation to coaching methods in various sport practices
• reflect on their own leadership style in relation to teaching and learning theories in various sport practices

Required Knowledge

Basic eligibility. Exception from demands on Swedish will be granted if the course is given in English.

Form of instruction

The course will be facilitated through a net-based platform where lectures, seminars and tutorials will be carried out by support from information and communication technology. In order to apply certain key elements of coaching the student is required to have access to a team or group of athletes.

Examination modes

The course is examined through the following examinations:

• An individual written seminar (Fail/Pass)
• An individual written assignment (Fail/Pass)
• An individual written paper (Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction)

All compulsory assignments must have received the grade Pass in order to get the course grade Pass. In order to have the course grade Pass with distinction all assignments must have received the grade pass and the final paper must have been graded with Pass with distinction.

For each examination, an ordinary test opportunity and a second re-examination is arranged within two months of the ordinary test occasion. In addition, a third re-examination will be arranged within one year after the course is completed. Examination based on the same syllabus as at the regular examination opportunity is guaranteed a maximum of two years after the previous syllabus has expired or the course has ceased to be offered (see rules for grades and examination on the basis and advanced level, Dnr: FS 1.1.2-553-14) . After two failed examination opportunities for a specific course or part of the course, the student has the right to change the examiner after written request from the head of department.

Departures from the syllabus can be made for a student who has decided educational support due to disability. Individual adaptation of the examination form must be considered based on the student's needs. The form of examination is adapted within the framework of the syllabus's expected study results. At the request of the student, the teacher responsible for the course, in consultation with the examiner, must quickly decide on a suitable examination form. The decision must then be notified to the student.

Transfer of credits
Student has the right to be tested if previous education or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in professional activities can be credited for equivalent education at Umeå University. The application for credit assessment is submitted to the Student Center / Examination. More information on credit counts can be found on Umeå University's student web site, www.umu.se/student, and in the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 6). A refusal to apply for credit can be appealed (Chapter 12 of the Higher Education Ordinance) to the Board of Appeal for the university.
