This course deals with various applications of the Cognitive Linguistics framework to second language teaching and learning. This framework provides a holistic view on language and conceptualization relevant to language teaching. While supporting existing methods in language teaching and learning, applied cognitive linguistics offers alternative ways of presenting and working with grammar and vocabulary in the language classroom. Moreover, it provides explanations as to why language learners may experience problems. The course provides a theoretical orientation as well as opportunities for analyses of practical applications.
Solid knowledge in linguistics is required. Teaching language: English (for shared work) and English, French, German, Russian or Swedish for remaining work, depending on language specialization. Depending on choice of main study area additional language knowledge is required: for English, Finnish, French, German, Russian level C1 according to CEFR in the chosen language, and for Linguistics and Language Teaching and Learning level C1 in any of the languages mentioned.
