About the course

Contents
The course comprises three parts.
Part 1, theory part (1.5 credits)
The course provides an introduction to magnetospheric physics, physics and observations of the northern lights, optical phenomena in the polar regions, pearl clouds, snow and ice-related phenomena, and the impact of climate on the Arctic environment. The course also includes a presentation of the research activities in the Kiruna area and study visits. A number of compulsory assignments are included.

Part 2, laboratory part (1.5 credits)
The module consists of a laboratory course that is presented in writing.

Part 3, project part (1.5 credits)
The component consists of a project work that is presented in writing.

The course will include a 4-day meeting in Kiruna in February.

Expected study results
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
  • explain how the northern lights arise and what they look like,
  • describe how ice crystals are formed in the air,
  • describe optical phenomena that can be seen in the Arctic and explain how they occur,
  • discuss the reason for conducting research on northern latitudes,
  • give examples of how climate change affects the Arctic environment.

Forms of instruction
The teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, project supervision, and supervision in laboratory sessions. Laboratories and projects are compulsory parts of the course.

Examination
The examination is done through written reports of the different parts of the course. On parts 2 and 3, one of the grades Fail (U) or Pass (G) is set. On part 1 one of the grades Fail (U), Pass (3), Pass with Merit (4), or Pass with Distinction (5) is set. To pass the course, all exams and compulsory parts must be passed, and the grade of the course will be the same as that of part 1. A student who have passed an exam can not take another exam for higher grades.
