In order to start your studies at the course, you need to register for the course on the Student Website between the 9th of January and the 17th of January. Otherwise you risk losing your place (seat) at the course. You also need to be registered to be able to follow the course and to get your results recorded during the course.
The course introduction takes place on Monday, January 16th, 2023. You can find the specifics of where and when course meetings will take place on the course scheduling system TimeEdit
The course consists of lectures as well as seminars. The seminars are mandatory. The course concludes with a written exam at the University.
Teaching, readings, discussions at seminars and the examination will all take place in English.
Course content
The overall aim of the course is for students to attain basic knowledge of the EU legal system. The course is broadly divided into three parts. The first part consists of a presentation of the historical background of the EU, its institutional structure, the character of its legal sources and its policy-making process. The second part gives an overview of the substantive rights and obligations protected by EU law with a focus on the rules of the internal market and fundamental rights. The third and final part focuses on the enforcement of EU law vis-à-vis the Union, the Member States, and individuals.
Literature
You are strongly encouraged to acquire a copy of the main textbook used in the course before the course’s first meeting, as well as of the TFEU and TEU Treaties, because your reading and seminar assignments will begin immediately. The book, An Introduction to European Law Third Edition by Robert Schütze (Oxford 2020), is available to order via online bookstores such as adlibris.com (by "googling" schütze robert introduction to european law and looking for the 2020 edition available for shipment to your country).

International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.
If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.
Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.
Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).

access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
register for courses
submit assignments and verify your study results
access your student e-mail
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
For exchange students and tuition fee paying students If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
