You have been admitted to the course Geographic Information Systems 2 at Umeå University. My name is Lina Polvi Sjöberg and I am the course coordinator and teacher for the course. The course is held entirely online but we will interact through an online forum. If you have any questions please contact me, email@example.com, or our study counselor, firstname.lastname@example.org. Welcome to the course, and I hope that you find it intellectually stimulating and useful for your scientific development.
In order to start the course, you need to register for it in Portalen. You can do that between 14-28 March. If you are not registered, you will not receive a GIS activation number to download the program or have your grades recorded during the course.
In order to log in to Portalen and register online, you need to have activated your Umu-id (see "Activate your user account" below for more information.Close

Location: Online: Cambro
The course starts March 21, 2018 and ends June 1, 2018. As the course in online, there are no set meeting times. However, the course is organized into five themes (~2 weeks each) with a report due at the end of each theme. A detailed schedule will be available at the start of the course.
Course information, assignments, and reading material are in English. The course is given on an internet platform, Cambro, and the course sites on Cambro will open on Wednesday, March 21. If you are registered for the course, you will receive instructions how to download ArcGIS to your computer when you log onto Cambro. You will need a PC or a Mac runnings Windows via Bootcamp to install ArcGIS.Close
International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular term (preferably prior to the Orientation Course). If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but not later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme.
If you will have housing through the International Housing Office you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.
Don't forget! Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat, etc.Close
We strongly recommend that you take part in the Orientation Course, which is open for all international students. The Orientation Course will give you the opportunity to get acquainted with Umeå and Umeå University. It is also a great chance to make friends with other international students. The schedule for the coming term will be available on the site below one month before the beginning of the term. There may be last minute changes to the schedule, so you should check for updates before you leave home or when you get to Umeå.Close
As a new student, you need to activate your user account approximately two weeks prior to the term start in order to, for instance:
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the term start.

When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:
About one week after you have activated your user account, you will receive an e-mail about how to apply for the UmU card. It will be send to your student e-mail account (email@example.com), so remember to test logging in to confirm that it works.
