Contents

The course provides a systematic presentation of methods and tools for digital imaging. Techniques for filtering and analysis in frequency and spatial domain are presented. In particular, we will discuss the problems related to sampling and re-sampling, image enhancement, restoration, segmentation and compression. The course includes a number of laboratory exercises and an independent project, which gives the student good familiarity with commercial software, such as MATLAB.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- implement and explain in detail the meaning of basic concepts in the field of image processing,
- develop in-depth knowledge of core principles for color coding of images,
- independently analyze and systemically test basic techniques and describe basic differences between image processing in spatial and frequency domain,
- implement and compare various technologies for image restoration, compression and segmentation,
- be able to apply basic principles in morphological imaging and image analysis,
- use basic principles in image processing to process digital images in an established imaging software such as MATLAB,
- suggest a design of a system to effectively solve advanced image processing problems.

Required Knowledge

90 ECTS, of which at least 15 ECTS in Mathematics and Digital Signal Processing, 7.5 ECTS or Applied Digital Signal Processing, 7.5 ECTS or Media Signals, 15 ECTS or equivalent.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper Secondary course English A/6. Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

Lectures, three practical assignments, one class Project. Feedback will be provided throughout the course in the form of both formative and summative work.

Examination modes

The knowledge will be assessed through oral and written presentation of the project assignment, three laboratory assignments and a written final exam which will be held the end of the course.

In the written exam grading breakdown is as following:
- grades Fail (U),
- Passed (3),
- Pass without distinction (4)
- Pass with distinction (5).
For assessment (3), at least 50% of the maximum points of the written exam is required. For assessment (4) at least 65%, and for assessment (5) at least 80% of the maximum points of the written exam is required.
The project assignment is assessed with Fail (U) or Pass (G). For successful completion of the course project (G), it is required that the project has been completed and presented both verbally and in writing with approved results.

The practical skills assignments are assessed with Fail (U) or Pass (G). For assessment (G), a successful laboratory assignment is required along with written report with approved results and self-reflections.

The total grades of the course are weighted together based on the results of written exam, laboratory assignments and course project work as following:

The grade ‘Pass (3’) is obtained if the written exam marks the grade 3 and the successful completion of the laboratory assignments and course project have been approved. The grade ‘Pass without distinction (4)’ is awarded if the written exam marks the grade 4 and the successful completion of the laboratory assignments and course project have been approved. The grade ‘Pass with distinction (5)’ is obtained if the written exam marks the grade 5 and the successful completion of the laboratory assignments and excellent course project work.

Students assessed in a test may not be re-assessed for a higher grade. For students who have not been assessed, additional re-sit exam opportunities are offered according to a stipulated schedule. A student who has passed two examinations for a course or part of a course without the pass results is entitled to have another re-sit examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons (HF 6 chapter 22). The request for a new examiner is addressed by the head of the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics.
