Industrial Design, Transportation, term 3

  • Number of credits 30 credits

About the course package

The exchange semester at Transportation Design Programme gives the students an advanced competence to work with complex contexts within mobility. They will develop their creative thinking process with tutoring support focused on trying to solve future transportation problems. The students are encouraged to reflect and develop their own views on design aesthetics, build vehicle interior concepts based on future mobility needs, and to deepen their research ability while defining relevant opportunities for knowledge creation in the field of transportation design.

5ID227 Storytelling in Design 7,5 credits
This course provides both theoretical and practical information related to visual storytelling used for conceptual design creation, visualisation and communication. It includes storytelling theory, movie editing and a creative project work.

5ID235 Project 3: Vehicle Interior design 15 credits
The course provides a practical platform to learn and develop the vehicle interior design process with a main focus in sustainable innovation and the three-dimensional product definition.
Module 1: Research and concept formulation (3 credits)
This module includes lectures, information and inspiration gathering, context mapping and reflection leading to argumentation around a vehicle interior design concept to be explored in the process. The result of this phase is usually a design brief, including an objective description of desirable attributes for a future vehicle interior proposal. Sustainable materials and technology are investigated and proposed as references for the project.
Module 2: Technical definition and ideation (4,5 credits)
During this module students learn how to define the basic technical and ergonomic references that will frame and support the creation of a future vehicle interior. The students also get guidance on both broad and focused idea exploration including analog and digital methods.
Module 3: Project development (6 credits)
This module consists of learning how to effectively implement conceptual ideas into a tangible product proposition supported by 2 and 3-dimensional design tools. Design detail is developed to a high level of definition.
Module 4: Presentation (1,5 credits)
The final part of the course will prepare the students to select relevant information needed to communicate the design process and create visualisation material that effectivelly conveys the artistic vision for a future vehicle interior proposal.

5ID100 Future Mobility 7,5 credits
This course provides a platform for both theoretical and practical information gathering and reflection about the role of transportation designers and their potential to work and influence towards sustainable mobility. It includes fundamentals of design research theory and an individual research assignment.

This course package is particularly interesting for exchange students at a later stage in their master studies, who are already proficient in 2D and 3D design tools and wish to develop their understanding about form, aesthetics, vehicle interior design along with research and reflection around future mobility needs.
The portfolio should demonstrate a good understanding of design methods and tools, together with a competent level of sketching and visualization skills.
