Congratulations! It is with great pleasure to inform that you have been admitted to the course International Commercial Arbitration at Umeå University. My name is Jan Leidö and I am the teacher primarily responsible for the course. On this page you will find important information that will be useful, so please read it carefully. In order to start your studies at the course, you need to register for the course on the Student Website between the 15th and 23rd of March. Otherwise you risk losing your place (seat) at the course. You also need to be registered to be able to follow the course and to get your results recorded during the course.
The course starts with an introduction on Thursday, March 22, 2023. Time and place will show in the schedule.

My name is Jan Leidö and I am the teacher primarily responsible for the course International Commercial Arbitration Law. I hope the information below will answer any question you might have regarding the course. If you have some additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me by any of the means listed on the bottom of this page. Also, make sure to regularly check the course website, available through Canvas once the course starts.
Introduction
The course starts with an introduction on Thursday, March 22. At this time, you will get information about the tutorials (including the papers to be submitted), suggestions on writing, and suggestions on presenting papers.
What Will You Learn?
As the name suggests, the purpose of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge of international commercial arbitration. Particular emphasis will be put on legal analysis and discussion of issues within central themes such as the arbitration agreement, the arbitrators, the proceedings, and the award.
Activities
This is a tutorial-based, meaning that: (1) The number of students in this course will be very limited; (2) there will be ample opportunities for you to practice your writing (also read: it is not recommended to study other courses at the same time since the time between each submission is quite short), thinking for yourself, ability to present your essential findings, and ability to argue for your papers; and (3) while there will be overreaching topics for each tutorial, your freedom to adapt that to your interest means that the exact content of the course is very much dependent on what the students choose to focus on.
The schedule will be available a month before the course begins.
Specific instructions regarding the overreaching topics for each tutorial will be posted on the course website in Canvas.
On Literature
Since this is a tutorial course, there is no mandatory course literature. During the course, there will be a reference shelf in the university library available for the students, as well as links to relevant digital material and access to legal databases. In addition, it is required that the student should independently learn to find relevant materials for the tutorials. If you still feel that you would like to have a general textbook to get an overview over the subject, a couple of suggestions will be available in the welcome letter.
One of these books (that will also be available on the reference shelf) can be recommended:
- Blackaby & Partasides, Redfern and Hunter on International Arbitration (7th ed., OUP: Oxford 2022). ISBN: 9780192869913
- Margaret L. Moses, The Principles of International Commercial Arbitration (3rd ed., Cambridge University Press: Cambridge 2017).ISBN: 978-1316606285
- Gary B. Born, International Arbitration: Law and Practice (2d ed., Kluwer Law International: Alphen aan den rijn 2015). ISBN: 978-9041166371
Redfern & Hunter is the longest book (≈ 700 pages), with quite a lot of references and cases, but it is also the most expensive book (≈ 800 SEK). Still it is a widely liked and used book in courses on international commercial arbitration. Moses is the shortest book (≈ 400 pages), with fewer references and cases, but it is also the cheapest book (≈ 350 SEK). Some students find this book easier to read. The third option, Born, is somewhere in the middle. It is a bit longer than Moses (≈ 480 pages) and somewhere between the other books in terms of price (≈ 600 SEK) and is a bit more advanced than Moses. Some students like this book and Born tends to have clear opinions on different aspects.
Examination
The examination of this course is made up of two parts, (1) an oral part (the tutorials) and (2) a written part (the papers). The course is made of 14 tutorials and 14 papers. There is no additional examination other than that. At the end of the course, the points of your five (5) best papers and your accumulated points for the oral part will be summarized to determine the grade.

CloseRecommended arrival times
International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.
If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.
Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

CloseAccess to Microsoft Office 365
Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
