The study of human language is part of modern cognitive science and the study of language is a study of the human mind. Language exists in the human mind and it has its neurological and biological base in the brain. The course explores how language is organised in the brain; the innate base that guides the development of language in children. It introduces the central topics in language acquisition and processing and drawing on examples from language disorders and multilingual brain it presents the central theories in the fields of psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. The course seeks to synthesize language theories covered by textbooks with current research methods and findings in research papers.
Accepted to read the master's programme in cognitive science, or 120 hp in speech and language therapy, or 120 hp in cognitive science, or 90 hp in linguistics and/or a language, or 90 hp in psychology or 120 hp i audiology or a equivalent in a cognate discipline.

Applicants in some programs at Umeå University have guaranteed admission to this course. The number of places for a single course may therefore be limited.
