How to start

  • 1. Reply to your offer

    Have you been admitted to a course or programme, but do not wish to keep your place? Then you should decline your offer by logging in to your account at Universityadmissions.se. In doing so, you free up your place to someone who is on the waiting list.

  • 2. Register on the course

    Registration at the student website

    You need to be registered for the course in the study documentation system to be able to follow the course and to get your results recorded during the course. Online registration is open between January 17, 2019 and January 23, 2019. If you do not register by January, 23 at the latest, you risk losing your place.

    To be able to sign in at the student website and register online, you need to have activated your Umu-id account.

  • 3. Course start

    January 23, 2019

    Time: 13.15-15.00

    Location: S 506

    Introduction

    The course will begin with an introduction, where we present important information about the course and the studies, such as the course set-up, the schedule, learning outcomes and general information about studying at the Department of Political Science.

    The introduction is held jointly for students in Political Science, Peace and Conflict Studies and Leadership and Organization.

    Seminars and other activities will be added to the schedule. See also the course site on Cambro for more information.

About the course

  • Course Information

    The purpose of the course is to develop the student's ability to conduct an independent scientific thesis work. The student should in connection to this gain further knowledge in one or several research areas within political science.

    The instruction is conducted through seminars and individual supervision. Supervision is given during the first semester the student is taking the course.

    For this course we use the learning platform Cambro. There you will find all you need, for example the schedule, instructions for seminars, a list of course participants, and notices from the teacher. This is also where you hand in your own work.

    To be able to log into Cambro you need an activated user account (Umu-id).

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular term, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but not later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme.

    If you will have housing through the International Housing Office you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Welcome fair

    Umeå Student Union invites you to this spring's ­Welcome Fair that will take place on the 23rd of January in the Universum building, between 10 am and 2.30 pm!

    There will be about 60 student ­organisations, non-­profit organisations and companies. This is your opportunity to learn more and get involved!

  • Orientation

  • Activate your user account

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account approximately two weeks prior to the term start in order to, for instance:

    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • register for courses
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the term start.

    For exchange students
    If you are an exchange student, you will receive information on arrival about how to activate your account.

    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card, with a cashless payment system

    About one week after you have activated your user account, you will receive an e-mail about how to apply for the UmU card. It will be send to your student e-mail account (xxx@student.umu.se), so remember to test logging in to confirm that it works.

  • Join a student union

    There are three student unions at Umeå University:

    • Umeå Student Union
    • Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology
    • Umeå Medical Sciences Student Union.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.
