About the course

This is an introductory course to the planning and management in health care. The course provides an overview of the various planning and management issues in health care. The following topics are introduced: management and leadership; conflict and communication; organizational and quality development; leading for change; decision-making, resource allocation and priority setting processes, and working environment. All subjects are discussed from an international perspective and illustrated with examples from healthcare in different countries. Students are encouraged to critically review the course material by relfecting on healthcare in their own country. After completing the course the student should be able to explain basic principles regarding the leadership and management of healthcare organizations; understand and discuss various aspects of management in healthcare; analyze needs and management of organizational development and quality management; understand the basic principles of personnel management and safety issues.
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars, group work and cases. Own work by students is an important part of the course. Students are expected to have oriented themselves in the course book before the course starts. Other course materials (cases, articles) can be read before the relevant lectures and seminars. Cases, course project and seminars where the projects presented are mandatory. The course is given in English.

For non-programme students applying as single-course students, the requirements are 120 ECTS, of which a minimum of 30 ECTS are within one of the following: health sciences, environmental health or social sciences.

English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 from Swedish Upper secondary education.
Basic entrance requirements for higher studies in Swedish language proficiency is also required if the course is taught in Swedish.
