Contents

This course introduces to the complexities of product development with a focus on construction, material selections and production techniques. The course also includes a course in parametric modelling and Rapid Prototyping. The course consists of the three following sections:

1. Parametric modelling (1.5 credits)
This section gives specialised knowledge in 3D modelling through a number of small exercises.

2. Design assignment (1.5 credits)
This section includes a design assignment where the student will be asked to create a new design for the existing product and develop this using 2D and 3D medias before the design is modelled digitally.

3. Product analysis (4.5 credits)
This section contains the analysis of the structure and construction of an existing product. The construction will then be redesigned with 3D modelling software with the purpose of creating files for prototype production with Rapid Prototyping (RPT) In order to create a full-functioning prototype, the students will assembly the RPT model parts with existing component

Expected learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

  • Apply basic modelling principles for parametric modelling, and model and prepare files for prototype production in Rapid Prototyping.
  •  Account for the relationship between a product’s form, function and construction, and be able to discuss the possibilities and limitations these can lead to in the design process.

Competence and skills

  • Analyse an existing mechanical or electronic product from construction aspects, develop a new design digitally, and model this proposal as a mechanical or electronic working design prototype.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work individually and professionally when creating a new original design with realistic constraints in size, cost, and time.

Required Knowledge

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design. Student must also have passed all previous courses on the Master's Programme in Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design or the equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.

Form of instruction

The teaching is in the form of lectures, practical software exercises and tutoring during an individual creative assignment. All sections of the course are obligatory.

Examination modes

Examination is carried out in the form of presentations of the assignments given during the three sections of the course. In order to obtain the credits for the course, the student must have completed and handed-in the specified exercises in section 1 and made a presentation of the result of the creative exercise in section 2 and 3. The grade Pass (G) or Fail (U) is a summary of the results within the three sections and is only given when the final presentation has been approved.
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.

ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University.  Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
