The course provides in-depth knowledge in qualitative methodology within geographical research and applied planning. Departing from contemporary research in human geography a number of qualitative traditions are introduced, where focus is on how qualitative methods are applied within planning and development work. The course deals with the different steps of the research process; from research design, gathering of empirical material (interviews, focus groups, participant observation etc.) to analysis and writing. Thematic analysis, discourse analysis, narrative analysis, text analysis and biographical research are examples of qualitative methods that are scrutinized in more detail.
