Spanish: Language and the Representation of Gender
7.5 credits
About the course
The linguistic representation of gender can encompass such widely differing phenomena as occupational designations, pronouns (he, she), swear words and the construction of gender in dictionaries and textbooks. The course examines the linguistic representation of gender both from a theoretical linguistic perspective and from a practical language preservation perspective. Research on the linguistic representation of gender is placed in its historical and political contexts.
The course consists of a shorter introductory module conducted in English, followed by a specialization module conducted in Spanish.
