About the course
Narrating Madness is aimed at master's level students and higher interested in literature, the body, history of medicine and psychiatry, among other topics. No similar courses are available in the department or in Sweden. This course offers a way to cover a long chronological sweep with a focused perspective.
This course will survey depictions of madness in western literature from the Middle Ages to the present (all texts will be read in modern English translation). While locating texts within their contemporary contexts as far as religion, gender and medicine, the course will engage with significant modern theoretical discussions of madness and creativity as offered by Foucault, Freud and others. Outline for distance course
The medium of instruction is English. All communication is via the course learning platform. The course includes a number of obligatory seminars via internet. Study groups in Umeå may possibly be arranged if there is enough interest. Access to a computer with broadband internet connection is required for participating in and completing the course tasks. Required Knowledge
Knowledge of English equivalent of English 6/English Course B from Swedish upper secondary school. Univ: One of these alternatives: 1) Bachelor of Arts (180 ECTS) or 2) At least 90 ECTS including a degree project or other independent scientific work of at least 7,5 ECTS, or equivalent knowledge.
Selection
Students applying for courses within a double degree exchange agreement, within the departments own agreements will be given first priority. Then will - in turn - candidates within the departments own agreements, faculty agreements, central exchange agreements and other departmental agreements be selected.
