About the course

The course gives an introduction to the theoretical origins of qualitative research and an overview of qualitative research design. Different aspects and methods relevant to qualitative data collection, i.e. in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and observations are presented. Participants are given the opportunity to practice and evaluate data collection methods both in class and as part of home assignments.

After completion of the course the student should be able to: Describe and understand the theoretical origins of qualitative research; Explain different qualitative research designs and their relation to data collection methods; Explain and discuss the requirements for performing qualitative research interviews, focus group discussions and observations; Gain an understanding of the ethical issues of conducting research in the field; Evaluate and discuss qualitative research articles on the basis of their research design.

Teaching is performed through plenary lectures, group work, the course web-site, hands-on training and home assignments. Teaching is given in English.

Required Knowledge

For non-programme students applying as single-course students, the requirements are 120 ECTS, of which a minimum of 30 ECTS are within one of the following: health sciences, environmental health or social sciences.

English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 from Swedish Upper secondary education. Basic entrance requirements for higher studies in Swedish language proficiency is also required if the course is taught in Swedish.

Selection

Students applying for courses within a double degree exchange agreement, within the department's own agreements will be given first priority. Then will - in turn - candidates within the department's own agreements, faculty agreements, central exchange agreements and other departmental agreements be selected.
