Why did you choose to study at Umeå University?
Well, a lot of people asked me why I chose to come to this little and beautiful place called Umeå. To be honest, it turned out to be the best decision I have ever made! Everything started as a personal challenge. I knew that here the winter would be very long and dark and the temperatures would not be so friendly; however, I felt that this was the place to be. Before coming here I heard that the quality of education was high, students were given all the tools to succeed and develop their skills and, of course, I would have the chance to study in English.
What do you like most about your courses?
The three courses that I attended during this acaemic term all had something in common: they succeeded in helping to develop my critical thinking skills. For instance, attending seminars has never been so beneficial! Indeed, it turned out to be an extremely effective way to learn and to think both independently and creatively. Students are not taught to look at things in just one proper way; instead, teachers help them to look at the world from different perspectives without being judgemental. Moreover, professors are always willing to support you, they make you comfortable during classes and at last but not least, they are keen on making your opinion matter!
What do you do when you are not studying?
I think that getting bored in Umeå would be really hard. There are plenty of activities even when outside is dark and cold (believe me, I experience that). To give you an example, you can call your friends and spend some time together having fika, which is a staple here in Sweden...you're gonna love it!
Since Umeå is just a small town, it easy to get around. I recommend you to have a walk by the river, especially when the spring comes and the city flourishes. One of my favourite things that I loved to do was going our for a run; there are many places to do so, including IKSU, one of the biggest gyms in Europe.
What has been your most memorable moment so far?
This is a tough one. Since I got here I had the chance to see and to experience so many different things that it would be hard to choose just one memorable moment. I got two experiences that I would have never had in Italy, I am talking about dog sledding and Aurora Borealis hunting. I really enjoyed those moments and you should definitely go for them since it's worth it!
What would you say or what advice would you give to another international student thinking of attending Umeå University?
I'd say that if you like challenges, international environments and putting yourself out there, well, Umeå is the place for you. Bring your heavier coat, gloves and scarf and get ready for this new adventure because every -27°C will be worth it in the end. Welcome to Sweden!
