Milla Ainamo

Incoming Double Degree student at the Master’s Program in Business Development and Internationalization.

How long have you been in Umeå?

-I have been in Umeå since the middle of August 2022.

What do you enjoy most about your time here so far?

-I have really liked the city of Umeå which is not the smallest town and has everything necessary but still everything can be reached by walking or cycling. The campus is very big and offers very versatile and flexible studying options which has been a big bonus especially since I live right next to the campus.

What is your experience so far studying at USBE and in Sweden? (any differences from your studies at your home university)?

-The system is surprisingly different compared to Finland. We only participate to one course at a time and each course lasts for one month. It makes the scheduling and time management a lot easier when you can truly focus on one subject at a time.

It is intensive but also rewarding to move forward with a faster pace. It has also been nice to study on campus after Covid and get to know other students on a different level than when studying remotely. The teaching methods have been quite versatile and depend on the professors which has also made the experience more interesting and compelling.

How is the student life?

-The buddy program has helped a lot in getting to know other exchange students as well as Swedish students. It has basically provided a very low barrier social life and different activities to enjoy even if you would not be naturally the most extrovert person. There are overall a lot of students in Umeå and it is truly a student city which makes the atmosphere very nice and easy to blend in.

What made you first consider Umeå and USBE as a destination for your exchange studies?

-Since I am doing a double degree in University of Vaasa and majoring in strategic business development there, we did not have other choices than Umeå University to do the double degree in.
The double degree program was the reason I applied to University of Vaasa in the first place and I think living in Sweden and getting to use the language in practice will be very helpful for future job opportunities.

Is there anything you would like to say or advice, to other international students considering studying in Umeå?

-To get most out of studying in Umeå would definitely require engaging fully to the student life and all of its aspects. Being a full time student and taking advantage of all the opportunities provided through the Buddy program and fellow students are the best ways to gain the best experience regarding both education and getting life-long friends and memories.
