International Business Programme

Hi! My name is Elin von Ahn and I will be your Program Advisor at the International Business Programme (IBP).On this page you will find important information that will be useful, please read it carefully.  I wish you a warm welcome to Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE) and to IBP!

How to start

  • 2. Course registration

    You need to make a online registration to the first course (International Business Administration A) through the site Student Web to be able to follow the program. Online registration in the Student Web opens August 23 and closes August 30. If you do not register in the Student Web by that deadline, you risk losing your seat at the program.

    To be able to sign in to Portalen and register online, you need to have activated your Umu-id account (you can do this in the middle of August).

  • 3. Course start

    Welcome meeting Aug. 25. Lectures start Aug. 30

    Welcome meeting
    Due to COVID-19 we will split the program into two group.

    Group 1: 10.00-11.00 a.m. in Lindell Hall 3 in The Social Science Buildning
    Group 2: 11.00-12.00 a.m. in Lindell Hall 3 in The Social Science Buildning

    An e-mail with information about which group you belong to will be sent out in August. Check your e-mail inbox and also your trash inbox as larged group mails might end up there. If you have not received it in the middle of August contact me.

    The first schedule
    The course "International Business Administration A" is a 30 credit course consisting of 4 modules offered one at a time after each other. Each module is 7,5 credit and lasts for 5 weeks. The first module is called "International Business Environment" and the schedule for that module will be published on the schedule webpage (se above) one month prior to the start of the module (that is the 3rd of August). The module starts the 30th of August.

    "Inspark" (=Kick-Off)
    After the welcome meeting on 25th of August USBEs' student association (HHUS) will take over for the "Kick-Off" which will take place during the rest of the week.
    These days are a great opportunity for you to get to know other students and to learn your way around Umeå and the university. The event is optional, and not mandatory. However if you cannot participate you must inform me! Schedule for the "Kick-Off" will be available on HHUS's website in July.
    Due to COVID-19 the Kick-Off will be splitt up in groups of 50 people or less in accordance with the The Public Health recommendations.

    International Orientation
    The International Office at Umeå University will arrange an online
    Orientation Course for international students starting 25th of August.
    It is recommended that all international students attend it.

About the course

  • Information about your first course

    In autumn you will start with the course International Business Administration A IBP, 30 credits. Your will study the course from the 30th of August until the 16th of January. This is the 1st semester of the program.

  • Transfer of credits

    If you have previous studies that you wish to transfer within the programme then it is very important that you contact me as soon as possible before the program starts. We will then have a look if a transfer would be possible.

  • Other information

    Course and program platform
    For all the modules in this course we use the course platform Canvas.

    There you will find all the information you need for each module for example schedule, assignment instructions, list of course participants  and messages from the teacher.
    You log into Canvas with your activated Umu-id at Umeå University student webb.
    The canvas page of the module is publiched in Canvas at the latest the day the modul starts.

    The International Business Program has also a special program page in Canvas. There I will post important information that concerns the whole program.

    Housing
    It is important that you start looking for housing immediately. It is very difficult to find housing on short notice. The best way is to create an account at www.bostaden.umea.se it is free to create a personal page and you start to accumulate queue-time from the first day that you create a personal page. There are also other options, see here.

    Student grants (for Swedish students)
    If you are entitled to apply for the study grant from CSN (studiemedel) then we recommend that you apply for a full year each time, i.e. autumn and spring semester. Apply for the period 20210830-20220605.

  • The Student web

    The website for current students has all sorts of information about services, support, legal and practical matters at Umeå University. You can sign in to the learning platforms, see your schedule and course overview, get a study certificate, apply for a degree or sign up for an examination.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.

    If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).

  • Activate your user account

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester in order to, for instance:

    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • register for courses
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    For exchange students and tuition fee paying students 
    If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

    To get the card, you need to apply for it. Here’s how to apply for the UmU card.

    There are three student unions at Umeå University:

    • Umeå Student Union
    • Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology
    • Umeå Medical and Health Sciences Student Union.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.

  • Access to Microsoft Office 365

    Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
