WELCOME TO

Master's Programme in Chemistry

Welcome to the Master’s programme at the Department of Chemistry! We are excited to guide you throughout your journey in this programme. As part of our programme, you will have the opportunity to learn and collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment, taught and supervised by active researchers in the field of Chemistry. My name is Christiane Funk, programme director. Please feel free to contact me for any information or guidance you may need during your studies.

How to start

  • 1. Your offer

You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

    Support for students with disabilities

If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

I want to activate my user account and install MFA

Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    Help! It´s not working

If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • 3. Programme registration

First, we wish to remind you to reply to your Notification of Selection Results at www.universityadmissions.se  or www.antagning.se, so that you do not lose your spot on the programme. If you have any questions, you are most welcome to contact us at any time. You will find our contact information at the end of this letter.

The first course in the programme is Biophysical-Chemical Concepts, which will be taught by Professor Gerhard Gröbner and will begin on September 2nd. Professor Gröbner will also serve as the course coordinator.

You need to be registered for the course in the study documentation system in order to be able to follow the course and to get your results registered during the course. Online registration is open on the student web between 26-08-2024 and 08-09-2024. If you have not registered by September 9th at the latest, you´ll risk losing your spot (seat). To be able to sign in at the student website and register online, you´ll need to have activated your UmU-id account: https://www.umu.se/en/student/we-can-assist-you/it-services/umu-id/

If you are unable to attend the registration and introduction, you need to contact the study counselor in advance, or else you risk losing your place on the programme.

Last day to start the programme is September 9th.

  • 4. Programme start

    2 September 2024

    Time: 10.00

Schedule is published here no later than 30 days before the start of the course

About the programme

  • Programme/course information

The recommended course order is given as follows:

    Year 1:

    5KE174 Biophysical-Chemical Concepts, 15 ECTS

5KE175 Advanced Experimental Tools in Chemistry, 15 ECTS

    5KE053 Chemometrics, 7.5 ECTS

    5KE176 Computational chemistry, 7.5 ECTS

    Optional course 15 ECTS

    Year 2:

    Optional courses 0-30 ECTS

    Degree project 30-60 ECTS

As a student in our Master's programme in Chemistry, you will have the opportunity to specialize in one of three areas:
    • Medicinal Chemistry
    • Environmental Chemistry
    • Biochemistry

Your specialization will be determined by your choice of free courses (at least 15 ECTS) and the field of your degree project. We encourage you to explore these specializations and take advantage of the diverse range of courses and research opportunities available to you.

The programme includes a degree project within the main area of Chemistry, which can be initiated once the prerequisites outlined in the syllabus have been met. In the thesis work, which can comprise 30, 45, or 60 ECTS, students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired during their studies. The work must address a specialization in the field of Chemistry and be reported in English, both orally and in the form of a written "Masters' thesis" report or essay. As part of the degree project, you will also act as an opponent to another master's student's degree project.

It is important to note that the degree project is an individual endeavor and an essential component of the programme. We encourage you to begin considering potential topics early on and to work closely with your supervisor to ensure that your work meets the necessary requirements and expectations.

  • Accommodation, tuition fees, resicence permit & pregnancy and lab work

    Accommodation

As Swedish universities do not own any housing, students are expected to arrange their accommodation. If you have not already found a place to live in Umeå, there are information and tips at our website:  http://www.umu.se/english/education/accommodation. We recommend you read this information and start registering for housing as soon as possible.

    Tuition fees

For students that need to pay tuition, all offers of admission to Umeå University are considered preliminary until the student has paid the first installment of his or her tuition fee. Applications for a residence permit will not be approved until the Swedish Migration Board receives notification from the university that your first tuition fee installment has been paid. After receiving a notification of admission letter from Umeå University, students will receive information about the process regarding the payment of tuition fees. For more information regarding tuition fee, please visit http://www.umu.se/english/education/tuition or contact tuitionfees@umu.se

    Residence permit

Students coming from countries outside the EU and planning to study for longer than three months, require a residence permit. Note that you might have to wait for the decision, so apply well in advance. More information can be found at  www.migrationsverket.se/info/start_en.html and www.swedenabroad.com/.

    Pregnancy and laboratory work

For safety reasons, pregnant individuals are not permitted to enter the laboratory or engage in laboratory work. If you are pregnant and enrolled in a course that involves laboratory work, please notify the responsible teacher before the course begins. They will provide you with appropriate guidance and support to ensure your safety and well-being.
